Lima | 20 July, 2006 [ 12:50 ]Justice official assassinated in Limean restaurant

A member of the First "Penal Court for jailed criminals" was assassinated last night by two strangers inside a restaurant in the center of Lima while dining there with a relative who was also wounded.
Around 6.00 p.m. two armed unidentified men entered the “Bunker” restaurant at Av. Rooselvet No. 354. Without saying a word opened fire against 60 year old Hernán Abelardo Saturno Vergara and his cousin Hugo Miguel Vergara. Saturno died on the spot while Vergara was rushed to the 'Maison de Sante' clinic.
The victim was a member of the court that presided and ruled on numerous drug trafficking cases, including the trial against several members of Mexico's Tijuana cartell. The police has not ruled out that the assassination is related to those cases.
Enrique Núñez, a friend of the victim, said that although he did not have contact with the judge for over a week, he never mentioned to have received any death threats.
Update:
The autopsy performed on Thursday morning revealed that the judge was hit by four bullets; three in the chest and one in tha face. One bullet went directly into his heart, causing his instant death.
