(LIP-wb) -- Ex-presidential candidate and leader of Peru's right wing opposition, Lourdes Flores Nano, evaluated the first one hundred days of President Alan Garcia's government, identifying his successes, mistakes, and expressing her recommendations.
The leader of the "Unidad Nacional" alliance detailed the, in her opinion, main positive aspects and initiatives, mentioning the government's position in favor of the ratification of the Trade Promotion Agreement (TPA) with the United States, its opposition to the axis Chávez-Castro-Morales, and its friendly approach towards nations such as Chile and Colombia.
She also expressed that one of the positives is the administration's commitment in maintaining the macro-economic balance in Peru that started during the last few years.
In respect to Garcia's mistakes, she mentioned that the government is concentrating too much on minor topics, making hasty decisions, "occasionally jumping the gun and applying political pyrotechnics”. She also criticized the government's disproportionate reactions on certain subjects that affect the whole country.
In that sense, she demanded from the President and his administration to concentrate on really important subjects like the State's modernization, education and health reform, and other services.
Lourdes Flores also added that she is disappointed that the president has not shown the necessary leadership to break the “institutional resistance” that opposes the reformation of the State. She also noticed obvious struggles between the Executive and the government party (Apra) which prevents coordinated efforts to attack the country's problems.
In regards to Peru's economy she recommended to apply measures that improve the quality of public spending, to initiate a tax reform and to prevent further “vilification” of the National System of Public Investment (SNIP).
Flores advanced that she will present another evaluation of Garcia's administration after six months have passed.
Lourdes Flores Nano, president of "Partido Popular Cristiano" (PPC), a party incorporated in the Unidad Nacional alliance, was a candidate and early poll leader, together with Nationalist Ollanta Humala, in the presidential race last April. However, on Election Day she slipped back into third place by a small margin, and Humala and Garcia went into a runoff in June that was ultimately won by Garcia.
