(LIP-wb) -- Peru's Minister for Women, Virginia Borra, informed on Saturday a preliminary lab analysis determined that the milk cartons handed to more than 500 school kids in Peru's department of Junin showed the presence of
coliform bacteria.
The milk was part of a free breakfast provided by a state nutrition program.
“We are still waiting for the lab's final results. But the preliminary analysis points to coliform, a bacterial contamination”, she said.
Last Tuesday, more than 500 children were taken to various hospitals of the city of Huancayo, Junin's capital, when they complained of vomiting, abdominal pain and headaches after consuming a school breakfast provided by the National Nourishment Program (Pronaa), an initiatve for Peru's poor led by the Ministry for Women.
The milk cartons originated from the supplying company "El Tambo".
Minister Borra said that on the basis of the preliminary results, the responsibility for the food poisoning would fall to the company.
