(LIP-wb) -- Peruvian president Alan Garcia ordered the National Police to repress, by use of arms if necessary, acts of vandalism committed by people who do not accept the results of the last Sunday's regional and municipal elections.
"From now on, I will call on the Attorney General and the National Police to use their suppression capacities. My obligation as president is to restore order and discipline, and end vandalism with whatever it takes" he said.
Garcia also called on the Judicial Power to severely punish the instigators of these acts of violence. Existing videos of the mass media could be used to identify rioters.
"We cannot allow them to act so savagely, motivated by their greed for power or financial and economic gains," Garcia said, adding that such acts represented a step backwards in the country's civil life.
Garcia announced these measures after a meeting with re-elected mayor of Lima Luis Castaneda Lossio congratulating him for his victory.
