Peruvian President again pleads for death penalty against terrorists

(LIP-wb) -- Peruvian President Alan Garcia again called for the most severe penalty possible for terrorists responsible for the murder of five Peruvian policemen and three civilians in a coca field near Machente, located in the region of Ayacucho.

After condemning this act of violence, Garcia asked Peru's Congress to approve a bill which would allow capital punishment for the crimes of terrorism.

“Our parliament shouldn't forget about this issue that I raised a few weeks ago (>> read story >>) and must provide judges and the government with the necessary tools to end these subversive acts. When it comes to terrorism, there is no other answer than punishment of the highest severity possible”, he stressed.

Garcia added that the mistakes committed during 1970's and 80 will not be repeated. Garcia himself, during his first term as Peruvian President, and government officials mainly ignored such serious and painful acts of violence just like it happened last Saturday.

Garcia said he trusted his interior and defense ministers in offering the necessary explanations and preventive measures of security to the country so they remain isolated acts.
