(LIP-jl) -- The controversial head of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, has declared that he would like to reestablish relations with Peru and its people "in the name of integration."

While in Quito, Ecuador, Chavez said that it was a perfect time for the two South American countries to work towards rebuilding their relationship after it was hindered last year when both countries pulled their respective ambassadors from each other's territory.

Chavez commented that he and Peruvian President Alan Garcia have moved on after they launched fierce verbal exchanges during last year's Peruvian presidential campaign, during which Chavez publicly declared his support for Garcia's opponent and now Peruvian opposition leader, Ollanta Humala.

Chavez and Garcia have even had the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas. The two met during last December's South American Summit held in the Bolivian city of Cochabamba.

"During our conversation in Cochabamba, we decided that in the name of integration and for the benefit of our people, it would be best to move on and work on our bilateral relationship," said Chavez. Both presidents are attending the inauguration ceremony of Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa today.

"There is a great possibility of having a solid, transparent, and healthy relationship which will bring our people together. Venezuela wants to rebuild and strengthen its ties," added the Venezuelan leader.
