(LIP-jl) -- At least 11 people died after they were bitten by bats in the Peruvian jungle area between Puerto Maldonado and Madre de Dios.
According to a report from Peruvian TV channel
Canal N, Mario Paredes Acosta, director of Santa Rosa Hospital, confirmed that all 11 people died from rabies, a disease commonly carried by bats.
The news has caused panic in the area. Authorities have ordered 20 inhabitants to evacuate the area, in addition to frequent fumigation rounds to homes and obligatory vaccine applications to area residents.
However, authorities say that it will not be enough due to the vast size of the area.
The report also mentioned that deer meat, a common staple in the Peruvian jungle, may also pose a threat since numerous deer have been found dead after receiving bites from contaminated bats.
According to authorities, most of those who died went to area medical posts well after getting bitten, leaving doctors almost no chance of saving their lives.
