(LIP-jl) -- In a span of three hours, torrential rains caused havoc and chaos in the province of Palpa (located in the department of Ica) on Saturday.
The rain caused mudslides in the areas of Sacramento, Rio Grande, Santa Rosa, and San Jacinto. Government officials estimate that more than 400 families became isolated when mudslides spread rocks and debris on the main highway leading into the towns.
The mayor of Palpa, Carlos Rivas, asked authorities from the departmental government of Ica, as well as from the federal government, to send road clearing machinery and equipment to clear roads and to divert water from an area river that has caused additional flooding.
Rivas also called on authorities to send tents, blankets, drinking water, and food to help those who have had their homes and land destroyed by the floods.
