(LIP-jl) -- South Americans from Colombia to Chile have been called on by Peru's leader and president Alan Garcia, to vote for the sacred Incan site, Machu Picchu, in the "New Seven World Wonder" contest.
Peru's most popular tourist destination is in the running for 'seven wonder' status with 21 other sites such as the Great Wall of China, the Roman Coliseum, and the Greek Acropolis.
"Today I have written an open letter to my friend and colleague, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe, and to all the Colombian people, to which I identify with and I feel part of as well, to ask them for their help and support in voting for Machu Picchu in the contest," commented Garcia.
He also indicated that his message was not just for the Colombian people, but rather to all South Americans.
"I would like to call on all Peruvians in the world who have internet access to not only vote for Machu Picchu but to help spread the word about this important contest," affirmed Peru's head of state.
The competition will be fierce. Voting has been taking place for nearly 2 years and opened with 200 candidates. At the end of 2006, the field was narrowed down to 21.
The official announcement regarding the results will be made on July 7, in Lisbon, Portugal.
