(LIP-jl) -- Peru's Minister of Production, Rafael Ray, informed that Ecuadorian, Chinese, and US investors are seriously interested in developing Peru's tuna industry.
"There has been a definite interest conveyed by various Ecuadorian groups to come to Peru to start operations in the tuna industry. They are already requesting fishing licenses to conduct tuna fishing operations in our waters, or they are negotiating agreements with Peruvian companies such as tuna processing plants," commented Ray to a group of members from the foreign press.
The Production Minister also said that he has been visited by Chinese business groups as well as the largest tuna businessman and icon in the world, Italian-American Renato Curto.
A recent act, passed last January, promotes foreign companies/investors to operate in the extraction of hydro-biological resources without paying common taxes or fees to the Peruvian government.
"I am pleased with the rapid effectiveness of the Promotion Act and I am sure that it will begin to bear fruit in no time at all," stated an emphatic Ray.
According to the Ministry of Production, expanding Peru's tuna industry will be a shot in the arm to Peru's economy. Figures released by the ministry state that 600 jobs are generated for every 1000 tons of tuna that are processed in Peru.
