(LIP-jl) -- Cecilia Bakula, Director of Peru's National Cultural Institute (INC in Spanish), informed that Peru currently has more than 100,000 sites and that 250 of those are located in Lima.
"The magnitude of our patrimony is such that we should not only prioritize the preservation and attention to these sites, but also involve local authorities in the process. We cannot do anything without them," sustained Bakula.
She also noted that the INC does not have the resources to support a wide scale preservation effort, making the participation of municipal and regional authorities vital to preserving Peru's archaeological sites.
Bakula stated that the Peruvian government has just recently made archaeological tourism a priority and that most of its efforts are directed at Peru's well known sites , such as Machu Picchu, the Nazca Lines, and Chan Chan.
She called for a massive overhaul to the current system to ensure that millions will continue enjoying Peru's archaeological treasures.
