(LIP-jl) -- Peru's most representative tennis symbol, Luis Horna, moved up four spots in the latest ATP rankings. Horna, who has recently been playing some of the best tennis of his career, is now ranked 46th in the world. Defeating Argentina's Daniel Nalbandian, currently ranked number 10, in Argentina's Copa Telmex last week solidified Horna's improved ranking.
Truck crashes into home in San Juan de Lurigancho
(LIP-jl) -- A family is lucky to be alive today after a truck crashed into their home in the Limean district of San Juan de Lurigancho. According to authorities, the truck, which was carrying building materials for a government program, had a problem with its brakes. Although no one was hurt, the driver of the truck was trapped for nearly two hours before rescuers could free him. Residents from the area called on authorities to implement speed bumps in the area, claiming that this is not the first time this has happened.
Police nab men who supplied Peru's drug lords with chemicals
(LIP-jl) -- Peruvian Police agents from the Northern Lima Division arrested two members of an organized ring that supplied chemicals to Peru's drug lords. Laurencio Villanueva (45) "The Chemist," and Felix Salazar "Crazy," sold chemicals, which are a vital ingredients in the cocaine-making process, to the general public. However, after months of investigations, police discovered that the majority of the chemicals were sold to drug lords. According to police, the two men made approximately US$20,000 per month in chemical sales.
Police eradicate and burn 4 tons of marijuana in Huanuco, Peru
(LIP-jl) -- Members from the Peruvian Police's Anti-Drug Unit eradicated and incinerated 4 tons of marijuana yesterday in the department of Huanuco. According to authorities, the marijuana was just days aways from harvest and was destined for the international market. Police arrested 4 "farmers" in the operation.
Beautiful nurse crowned 2007 Lima Carnaval Queen
(LIP-jl) -- Veronica Martinez (22), a nurse by trade, was crowned as Lima's 2007 Carnaval Queen. Among those in attendance was Lima's Mayor Luis Castañeda, who was on hand to close the Carnaval festivities. Hundreds of people wearing costumes danced at Lima's 'Parque de la Muralla" while members of the Peruvian National Police Orchestra played away.
