Peru: Lima's Stock Exchange drops, affected by global markets
(LIP-jl) -- Peru was also affected by the plunges registered throughout the world's stock markets yesterday as the Lima Stock Exchange (Bolsa De Valores de Lima-BVL) dropped 2.09%. The BVL, which dropped 3.01% at 10:51am yesterday, had registered gains in 6 consecutive sessions before yesterday's setback. Some of the companies recording losses yesterday were Southern Copper (-6.99%), Cerro Verde (-2.65%), and Peru Copper (-7.73%). In general, the BVL has increased by 18.6% in 2007, compared to a 27.1% increase in 2006.
Fire destroys 4 homes in Callao
(LIP-jl) -- A short circuit is believed to have caused a fire that destroyed 4 homes in the Limean port city of Callao. The fire, which started at approximately 1pm yesterday afternoon, claimed approximately S/100,000 (US$31,900) in damage and left 7 families homeless. No serious injuries or deaths were reported.
Unlucky Tuesday for Peruvian sports stars Horna and Mulanovich
(LIP-jl) -- Peru's surfing queen Sofia Mulanovich, one of the best female surfers in the world, was knocked out of the Roxy Pro Gold Coast surfing tournament in Australia. A series of bad performances and bad luck led to her early exit. Meanwhile, Peru's tennis ace Luis Horna, pulled himself out of the Mexican Open in Acapulco after sustaining a leg injury. Horna, who won the same tournament last year, was tied 1-1 in the first set with Gaston Gaudio (Argentina), when he apparently pulled a hamstring. After receiving treatment, he attempted to play through the injury but it proved to be too painful for him to continue.
Man dies of heart attack while being robbed
(LIP-jl) -- Tomas Jose Ugarte Chacon (53) died of a heart attack yesterday while two men robbed his home in the Limean district of Magdalena del Mar. According to police reports, Ugarte arrived home last night and found the door unlocked. He walked in and was immediately subdued by the men who tied and blind-folded him. Ugarte died while he was bound. Since there were no signs of forced entry, police believe the criminals were acquaintances of Ugarte. The men took money and jewelery from Ugarte's home. The men have not been captured.
Malaysian man caught with 4.4 kilos of cocaine at Lima airport
(LIP-jl) -- A Malaysian citizen, Jothee Batumala (32), was arrested yesterday after authorities from Peru's Customs Agency found 4.4 kilograms of cocaine packaged in plastic bags hidden throughout his luggage. According to Batamula, he was unaware of the contents of the suitcases. He also reported that he was delivering the suitcases as a favor for a friend. He later confessed that he was going to receive US$3000 for the delivery. Batumala was heading to Madrid.
