Police seize more than 4,000 marijuana plants in the department of Ancash, Peru
(LIP-jl) -- Peruvian National Police authorities seized 4,417 marijuana plants yesterday from a passion fruit farm in the San Rafael Valley, located in the department of Ancash. The plants were scattered amongst the passion fruit plants, hidden from unsuspecting eyes. Police detained Fernando Abanto (26) and Alcides Abanto (21) on charges of drug cultivation.
Mother & son die after gas leak causes fire in Chosica
(LIP-jl) -- Tragedy struck a family in Chosica as a fire caused by a gas leak claimed the lives of a 19 year old mother and her 7 month old son. The victims lived in a home that also served as an informal gas tank distribution sales point. Firefighters took the victims to the Ate Vitarte Hospital but both child and mother died on their way to the hospital due to the severity of their burns.
Lima's stock market down for the second consecutive day
(LIP-jl) -- Lima's stock market - la Bolsa de Valores de Lima (BVL) - reported a second consecutive loss yesterday. The loss was due to the drop in metal prices, which experts say were affected by Tuesday's global market plunge. The BVL reported a loss of 0.80%, this after dropping 2.09% on Tuesday. Among yesterday's losers were Cerro Verde (-1.82%), Volcan (2.81%), and Atacocha (1.4%). Not all was bad news for Peru's mining stocks as Southern Copper gained 3.72%, leveling off at US$70.50 per share.
Another drug mule caught at Lima's airport
(LIP-jl) -- Another drug mule was caught yesterday at Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport. This time a South Korean citizen, Sang Chon (31), was arrested after Peruvian Customs agents detected 3.5 kilograms of pure cocaine in his suitcases. According to Chon, he was delivering the suitcase to a "friend" and he was unaware of the its contents. Chon was on his way to Barcelona, Spain.
Thunder and lighting fall from Limean sky
(LIP-jl) -- Residents of Chosica, Puenta Piedra, and Carabayllo were awaken by loud thunder and lightning during in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Peru's weather service (Senamhi) stated cases of thunder of lighting were also seen near the ocean parallel to Carabayllo. Senamhi stated this strange weather could continue at any time during the next couple of days.
