Morning News RoundupPunctuality campaign begins throughout Peru

(LIP-jl) -- Yesterday at 12 noon marked a new era in Peruvian culture, or so the government hopes. President Garcia started the punctuality crusade by ringing in the exact moment Peruvians should have synchronized to the Peruvian Navy's operation time in a ceremony in Lima's Plaza de Armas. Sirens blared and church bells rang all over Peru to let Peruvians know that punctuality will be a priority in Peru from now on. Will it work? Only time will tell.

Stray bullet strikes elderly woman in Lima.

(LIP-jl) -- Zoraida Rojas Padilla (68) was struck by a stray bullet in the Limean district of Los Olivos yesterday when she was on her way to visit a friend who had just arrived from Iquitos. The man who shot Rojas was reportedly shooting at street gang members who were attempting to rob and assault him. Rojas was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors said she was in serious condition. Further information regarding Rojas's condition and the gunman's whereabouts were not released.

Lima's stock market up after after hitting 2-day slump


(LIP-jl) -- Lima's stock market - la Bolsa de Valores de Lima (BVL) - reported that trading increased by 0.77% yesterday, ending a two day losing streak. The increase was due in large part to the increase in world metal prices and the positive outlook of the Peruvian economy. Among yesterday's winners were Graña & Montero (+2.70%), Austral Group (+8.79%), Raura (+6.15%), and J.R. Corporation (+5.15%).

6 die in vehicle accident near Trujillo, Peru


(LIP-jl) -- 6 people died yesterday after a truck ran off the road and fell into a ravine. The truck, which was delivering potatoes to the city of Trujillo, apparently experienced mechanical failure. Authorities identified the victims as Sol Villanueva Sanches, Manuel Villanueva Polo, Victor Sandaipan Carrion, Jaime Carrion Quispe, Miller Vega Rodriguez, and two-year old Richard Villanueva Lavado. The accident also left 14 other passengers injured. No additional information has been released as to their conditions.

Police nab ATM robber in Piura, Peru


(LIP-jl) -- 27 year-old Wilfredo Moran was detained by Peruvian Police authorities yesterday while he was waiting to claim yet another victim in Piura, Peru. Moran is part of a crime ring that targets ATM users. According to police, the criminals posed as taxi drivers near banking institutions. When customers finished his/her ATM transaction, the criminals would offer their taxi services. Once aboard the taxi, they would take the victim to a safe house and rob and assault them of all of their processions, even returning to the ATM to empty their bank accounts. Police are now on the heels of Moran's associates.
