No price hikes for foreign tourists at Machu Picchu
(LIP-jl) -- Peru's Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Mercedes Araoz denied reports that foreign tourists would have to pay steeper prices to enter Machu Picchu this year. According to Araoz, regional authorities made a foolish decision by suggesting such an unconstitutional measure. "You cannot discriminate between foreign and national tourists. That is prohibited in our constitution," stated Peru's top tourism authority.
Townspeople invade city hall in Puno, Peru
(LIP-jl) -- Hundreds of townspeople from the province of Azangaro, located in the department of Puno, invaded the Azangaro municipal headquarters demanding the resignations of their mayor, Ruben Canchari, and his aides. According to a report from Peru's RPP Radio, the townspeople claim that Canchari and his aides have stolen more than S/16,000 (US$5,000) in city funds.
250 security cameras to be installed in Arequipa
(LIP-jl) -- Alfredo Zegarra Tejada, the major of Peru's second largest city - Arequipa, announced that 250 video cameras will be installed throughout the district of
Jose Luis Bustamante and Rivero as part of his administration's crackdown on crime. According to Zegarra, 30 additional cameras will also be installed in the high-risk areas near
Avenues Caceres, Estados Unidos, and Dolores. "The idea is to have the means to clearly identify criminals, thereby making their apprehension much more likely," declared Zegarra.
Bolivian citizen caught with 3.8 kilos of cocaine at Lima's airport
(LIP-jl) -- Bolivian citizen Roger Tito Viana (29) was caught with 3.8 kilograms (8.3 lbs) of pure cocaine by Peruvian Customs authorities as he attempted to pass a security checkpoint at Lima's Jorge Chavez Airport. Viana, who was heading to the Spanish capital of Madrid, had 2.8 kilograms of cocaine in his suitcase and more than 100 cocaine-filled capsules in his stomach, equaling to an additional kilogram. Authorities had to wait for Viana to 'produce' the capsules. According to Viana's confession, he was going to receive US$4,000 for his services.
Mack Trucks enter Peruvian market
(LIP-jl) -- One of the most representative brands in the United States trucking industry will now attempt to make a dent in the Peruvian market. Mack Trucks, part of Volvo Automotive Group, was officially introduced into the market last week by officials from Volvo Peru. "The brand and products are extremely versatile and durable, two very important factors in succeeding in the Peruvian market," stated Rolf Smedberg, General Manager of Volvo Peru.
