(LivinginPeru News) -- Peru's National Agricultural Service (SENASA in Spanish) informed that over 80,000 alpacas have been affected by colder then normal conditions in the Andean region of Apurimac, Peru.
SENASA's director, Jose Pereira Batallanos, indicated that 34% of the region's 233,324 total alpaca population has come down with either bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, or general malnourishment due to the lack of grazing areas killed off by the bitterly cold weather.
The provinces that have been hit the hardest are Aymareas, Grau, Andahuaylas, Antabamba, and Cotabambas.
Batallanos called on Peruvian authorities to immediately send antibiotics and vitamins to help the the region's alapaca population survive this difficult time.
Batallanos also informed that agricultural losses included potatoes (2,500 hectares), corn (1,525 hectares), beans (973 hectares), and wheat (450 heatares).
