(LivinginPeru News) -- According to Peru's National Ombudsman office, respiratory illness rates in Limean children under the age of 5 have doubled over the past 10 years.

Peru's official ombudsman, or citizen's advocate, Beatriz Merino, announced the findings from a 2005 case study of Limean children and the effects of Lima's severe pollution problem at a press conference on Monday.

"Lima's air is highly contaminated and it represents danger for Lima's 8 million inhabitants," stated Merino.

According to the case findings, respiratory illness rates increased from 400,000 in 1994 to 1 million in 2005.

Merino attributed Lima's pollution problem to its unorganized and irrational public transportation system, the poor quality of diesel fuel, and the use of older-model automobiles. According to Merino, Vehicle emissions account for 86% of Lima's poor air quality.

Peru's ombudsman urged Peruvian President Alan Garcia and Limean Mayor Luis Castaneda to implement measures that will help solve this growing problem and prevent millions more from developing respiratory illnesses .

I beleive that this should be a problem attacked by the government
immediately, if not sooner. I have visited Peru, Lima a few times
being as I married a limean as they are called in this forum, and
noticed this problem right away it is a serious matter and should
be at least addressed , and something done, to clean up the air
for the sake of the children who have to breathe the air every
day. I'm sure any measure of help done continually, and over time
will help, and results will encourage , new laws to clean it up....
