Peru: Endangered species slaughtered in port city of Chancay

(LIP-jl) – The slaughtering of marine wildlife found on the endangered species list continues to take place in Peru without much preventative efforts demonstrated on the part of Peruvian authorities.

However just weeks ago, the killing of a leatherback turtle led to the arrest of 4 subjects involved in the trade of its meat.

The slaughter of a leatherback turtle, one of the seven rarest animals in the world, was caught by a photographer in the port city of Chancay.

The turtle was beating endlessly with a bat by a local fisherman who has only been identified as “Mauro.” The female turtle, which weighed approximately 100 kilograms (220 lbs.) was then stripped of its meat and taken to a local market to be sold.

Authorities find this to be an ironic trade since the flesh of the turtle is considered to be toxic to humans.

“What is important here is that people involved in the slaughter, and trade of its meat were all caught by Peruvian Ecology Police with the support of local police authorities from Chancay. They will now be placed under the custody of the Public Ministry where they will face charges of crimes against nature, and the capture and killing of an endangered species,” expressed Alessandra Romano Cuadra, Vice-President of the wildlife protective organization ORCA (Scientific Organization for the Conservation of Mammals and Marine wildlife).

The detained suspects could face up to 10 years in jail since the leatherback turtle is protected under the Peruvian Supreme Decree 013-99-AG which establishes the turtle as an endangered species.

This picture is extremely disturbing. But then again, almost all the things men do are disturbing. Why are men so mentally ill with sadism and all out cruelty. They'll do anything for money. It's disgusting.

AS THE SAYING GOES. "ONE ROTTEN APPLE DOES NOT SPOIL THE WHOLE BUNCH." THERE ARE A LOT OF WOMEN WHO ARE ALSO JUST AS GUILTY WHEN IT COMES TO SADISM & CRUELTY. DOES LIZZY BORDEN RING A BELL? OR HOW ABOUT THE SWARM OF FEMALE GUARDS THAT WERE PRESENT AT ALL THE NAZI DEATH CAMPS IN WWII THAT GOT OFF WITH A SIMPLE SLAP ON THE WRIST FOR THEIR ACTIONS AGAINST MALE & FEMALE ALIKE? THESE FEW EXAMPLES OF, "FEMALES'' ARE ALSO JUST AS DISGUSTING & SADISTIC.

It is good that the press is bringing this story to light in order to raise awareness about the continued threats to sea turtles. As a point of clarification; however, the turtle shown in this photo about to be struck is NOT a leatherback turtle. Although the article refers several times to a "leatherback" turtle being slaughtered, from the picture this was either a green turtle or a hawksbill turtle. Both are considered either endangered or critically endangered around the world, but for the sake of accuracy I wanted to point out the mistake. -- David Godfrey, Director, Caribbean Conservation Corporation (www.cccturtle.org)

Don't get me wrong, I love turtles, and I'm a big fan of animals, especially endangered ones, and don't agree with what this man is doing. But it often is not a simple case of simple sadism, male or female. People have to eat, and if I were not as well off as I am, and I had to feed my family, I would probably choose to kill the last turtle on earth, so my family could live (notextinctyet.blogspot.com)
