
Suspected child molester caught in Cuzco
(LIP-jl) -- A Cuzco area teacher was arrested yesterday after angry community members accused him of molesting a 10 year old boy. Marco Masias (31) is also accused of belonging to an international child pornography ring due to evidence found in Masias's home, which included 80 DVDs containing child pornography, a video camera, a computer loaded with pornographic pictures of underage boys, and a phone book with several foreign phone numbers. Masias was a teacher of religion at Humberto Luna and Tupac Amaru schools.
Limean district begins inspections of 'cebicherias', 'chifas'

Officials from San Juan de Miraflores's health department started a widespread operation targeting unsanitary 'cebicherias' (Peruvian seafood restaurants that specialize in Peru's national dish, as well as other dishes) and 'chifas' (Peruvian infused Chinese food restaurants) that pose as health hazards to local residents. Yesterday's operation, which will continue at random intervals, targeted restaurants in and around the markets of Ciudad de Dios, Modelo, and Primero de Mayo.
Volcanic activity puts southern Peruvian region on alert
(LIP-jl) --Regional authorities from the department of Moquegua have issued a warning in the wake of increased activity of the Ubinas Volcano. Yesterday morning two explosions went off within hours of each other, causing panic among residents who live near the base of the volcano. Authorities from Peru's Civil Defense have moved into the area to help distribute 5,000 protective masks that will minimize the health hazards caused by falling ash. Authorities are also evaluating the possibility of relocated the population until experts clear the area of danger.
Students and police clash in Cuzco, Peru
(LIP-jl) -- Students from Cuzco's San Antonio Abad National University and officers from the Peruvian National Police clashed when students attempted to enter the campus of Paraninfo University, site where a new regional collegiate law is being evaluated. Students threw rocks and anything else they could get their hands on at police. Authorities responded by launching tear gas at the crowd of nearly 600 students.
Lima Stock Exchange (BVL) Recap
(LIP-jl) -- Lima's stock exchange (Bolsa de Valores - BVL) ended the month's trading session by registering its fifth consecutive trading high of the week. Experts from Peru's Central Reserve Bank informed that the month's growth trend was attributed to the increases in Peru's mining, industrial, service, and construction industries. The BVL closed Friday's trading session at 17,157.05 points, an increase of 0.81% from yesterday's close. The Selective Index -ISEL (index that groups the 15 leading stocks), closed at 28,723 units, an increase of 0.81%.
