(LIP-jl) -- In a very unusual coronation that many deemed problematic, Peruvian model Jimena Elias was chosen as Miss Peru Universe 2007 and will represent the Andean nation in the upcoming Miss Universe beauty pageant in Mexico.

Selected by Peru's National Corporation of Beauty (Corporación Nacional de la Belleza), Elias was crowned as 'Peru's most beautiful woman', according to Andina News Agency, and did not display any type of reaction when negative comments were made by the crowd during her coronation.

"The comments made (about her coronation) do not worry me, nor do the things people may say. The outcome was legitimate because the jury chose the winner from a group of various candidates," declared Elias, who also stated she already feels prepared to participate in the Miss Universe Pageant.

Meanwhile, Percy Luzio, the director of Peru's National Corporation of Beauty, that the decision was made based on placing Peru's best qualified candidate in the Miss Universe pageant.

"This was the right decision," said Luzio, who applauded the jury's decision.

**Update**

More details have been uncovered in Jimena Elias's selection as Ms. Peru Universe 2007.

Peru 21 reports the pageant was not transmitted on local television, something which is very uncommon for this type of event in Peru.

Additionally, the event's main advertiser/sponsor, the University of San Juan, is owned by her father, who some allege played a roll in naming his daughter Ms. Peru Universe 2007.

Former Peruvian beauty queen and beauty pageant organizer Jessica Newton indicated Jimena is a 'nice girl,' but 'her selection was definitely rigged.'

According to Peru 21, this is not the first time Jimena has caused controversy by winning a beauty contest as her coronation of Miss Teen Peru also garnered the same type of reaction from the public and insiders.

In the world there are things more important than Miss Universe or Miss Peru peageant. But stupid or banal things as designate someone as Miss Peru without contest, is a reflect about how underdevelopment, thir-world and antidemocratic are our countries.

Woman are the traditional representation of beauty. Beauty contests are just that: a celebration of beauty. Also it presents  a great opportunity  for each contestant to promote their own country to the world. It is not just about physical beauty but also personality, grace, and skills in interpersonal relations. The young lady in the picture appears to be more in tune with the millions of Peruvian women of blended Hispanic/endoamerican origin. I am sure she will do her best to represent as all well. Best wishes.

wow! you sound so smart. it makes you sound even smarter if you know how to spell and use the enlgish language. I bet you are ugly. only an ugly person would spend the time talking about how trivial a beauty peageant is. get a life loser!

Sorry Steve to have caused you to loose your temper, your manners, and above all the respect every one else deserves in this blog. There seems to be something in my writing that awakens a  profund sence of insecurity causing you to insult me. Be assured that was not my intent. Good Day.

For the life of me I have never been able to figure out why so many of my comrades and colleagues hold beauty contests against the participants. It is a capitalist society in which we live and each person  has to do the best they can to keep their head afloat. I think these young women who participate are simply doing their best to take part in the modern world which they did not create, but, nevertheless in which they must live.
If the ultra-left English-speakers can't handle that, then perhaps they should bring about a revolution in their own countries and leave these young women alone

I completely agree with Vincente Nomas. He phrased it beautifully and it was very well written. Beauty pageants do no harm, in fact they can help many young women gain important experiences in life enabling them to gain the confidence to move forward in their lives.

Why it is widely accepted for men and women to compete in sports for a national title and not for women in pageants makes no sense. Is it really more important for someone to be able to run faster than another person than it would be for women to compete for the best all around person in looks, personality, grace and style?

My best wishes for Miss Peru in the upcoming Miss Universe. I am sure she will create a very positive image for Peru and will learn and grow from the experience.

In order to make a comment I think we need a little more information to the story. We don't know why some felt the coronation was problematic and there is no explanation of what the negative comments were. If you are going to ask for an opinion give us the full story.

Obviously had a nose & lip job.  If that was the best they could do, then she better be an A student, play beethoven, & recite shakespeare, while chewing gum at the same time...

Seriously, i think people criticize the fact that, I, or they, wouldn't have voted for her.  And looks have everything to do with it.  It is a "beauty" pageant.  She must just know someone with power in the industry.

Yes Joe, I agree with you all the way. This story has a very bad smell to it to say the least. It is obviously rigged. Another under the table transaction, you can count on it Joe.Money mouth

Looking at the picture I would say she is a good looking girl with a nice body, but to be honest I could find a dozen better looking women walking the streets in Lima in about an hour.  Sounds like daddy rigged it for his little girl.  So goes it, he who has the gold makes the rules.

i think all latin women are very beautiful and i am happy to see a fine looking woman represent peru.  i agree with scott, i see georgeous women in lima every day.  i only wish their american counterparts took the same pride in their bodies.  american women are fat and obnoxious.  the latin woman definitely have the upper hand.  thank god my wife is latin.  for the life of me i cannot figure out why anyone would marry an american girl.

# al says :

also, i think the woman with the finest, sexiest, bomb-ass body should represent their respective countries.  who cares about their intelligence or gracefulness.  the whole point of a beauty pagent is to choose the best looking woman.  men really don´t care about social graces, initially, because those can be learned.  just give us the finest woman to accompany us and we are happy.

I don´t know what really went on, though I perceive that it stinks! My opinion is that the girl should never have presented herself as a candidate in a contest her father was promoting economically. It is so unethical!!!

I also agree with Vicente.

I'm In NZ and a friend in Lima sent me a pic' of her from the comp' as well as links to her portfolio. She's absolutely gorgeous! - smart and well connected by all accounts - Congrats - she'll make a great ambassador in this context. Wink

I happen to know Jimena  in person she is a gorgeous girl, no nose  or lip jobs, she will do an excelent job in  the upcoming Miss Universe pageant, who cares if it  was under the table or not either way she would always be the winner, I'm proud she is going to represent my country she will go far and if you are against beauty pageants just don't  watch them or don't waste your time writting comments  about them--- Good Luck Jimenita!!!!Wink

# Robert Conant says :

Would it not be great if Jimena's father owned and ran a brain and heart surgeon medical school where all the candidates were smart and well-connected and the most well-connected buys her diploma and board certification and goes on to become Peru's Minister of Health and then World Health Organization's director to finally retire as our families' specialist. Then there's the architecture, political science, law, environmental sciences, physics, cosmetology, etc. schools to be added to the rumor.

Miss Universe is a beauty contest. Many young girls were hoping to participate I'm sure. Naming a representative to the contest is just no fair.

Definitely not Playboy material.  Maybe she could do a Hustler spread if daddy buys the magazine...

Most of the comments are so fricking pathetic, especially of those that are not even Peruvian.  I'm so glad Jimena was picked as Miss Peru, she is really beautiful; we Peruvians know that in past contests the girls that usually win are so fricking ugly that they don't event make it to the second round in the main event.  Whether with a jury or finger-picked, this kind of contests are biased and set up before hand.  I'm glad they at least picked a really beautiful girl to represent Peru this time.  Now, this is a beauty contest, is not a smart-girl contest, or the most intelligent-girl contest....it is a BEAUTY contest, even if it sounds frivolous, it is just based on looks!!

I'm father to a wee Peruvian of 4 years of age. For the child's sake, we have to remember that any fragging contest not about beauty is pathological.

All I can say is this, I am a proud Peruvian woman living in the USA and even though I don't know Jimena (since I have been living in the USA for 21 years), I was looking forward to find out WHO WON THE MISS PERU CONTEST.  Come on paisanos, indeed, we should let all the peruvian girls who want to participate, doing democratically.  Hey, we peruvians can do better than that.  Nothing against Jimena, I wish her good luck, but, really, when are we going to learn to do things right?  And for the gentleman who said the ugly ones always win, excuse me....but we have had beautiful contestants before who have given Peru several titles....learn a little be more my friend.  Good night everyone.Kiss

based on the pageant shown last night, it is obvious that personality can make someone very beautiful.  bravo to the japanese winner!  and too bad peruvians didn't get the chance to pick someone from peru with half the poise, grace, & character.  hopefully next year, the peruvians will think twice about taking a bribe...
