(LIP-jl) -- On the heels of his trip to Washington D.C to promote the ratification of the free trade agreement (FTA) between Peru and the United States, Peruvian President Alan Garcia qualified the interpellation of Peruvian Prime Minister Jorge Del Castillo as 'inopportune.'
Although it is within the Peruvian Congress's right to question the Prime Minister, Garcia was visibly uncomfortable with the timing of the interpellation.
"I feel that an interpellation is unfortunate, I always have, but interpellations should occur at the proper time. I am about to travel to the United States to impulse the free trade agreement, speak with 40 U.S. Democratic and Republican Senators, and meet with President George Bush while my cabinet is being interpellated? I truly believe this is not the right moment," stated Garcia.
"In what type of state will the President of Peru go and speak to the most important players of the world? With weakened state and an interpellated cabinet?", asked Garcia.
President Garcia concluded: "Why couldn't this have waited till next Wednesday? Have mercy on Peru!", affirmed the Peruvian leader.
Garcia's comments have led the Peruvian media to speculate that the interpellation has caused a rift between Garcia and Mercedes Cabanillas, President of Peru's Parliament.
Cabanillas, who is from Garcia's APRA political party, responded to Garcia's comments by telling him to travel in peace since the country is not living a moment of instability.
