Peru's Fujimori "incarcerated" in mansion

(LIP-ir) -- Ismael Vega, director of the Peruvian branch of the international human rights organization Amnesty International, has said that it is insulting to have Alberto Fujimori on house arrest in a mansion.

Chicureo, Chile, one of Chile's choicest areas, is where Peru's ex-president is renting his luxurious mansion.

Fujimori has been charged with corruption during his terms as president and violating human rights. "Paradoxical and ironic," is how Ismael Vega described the situation to Andina Agency.

"It's offensive and a slap in the face to all of the victims whose rights were violated, that the man who committed these crimes is on house arrest with all the comforts in the world."

Despite his previous statements, Vega added that the law doesn't stipulate a certain type of residence for house arrest.

Vega expressed that he is confident that the Chilean police will take the necessary security measures. He explained that this house arrest requires extreme measures of security.

Peru's ex president has moved to an inner part of the Chicureo property. Houses in this area are priced from 340 thousand to 490 thousand dollars.

Isn't it ridiculous to single out Fujimori and/or his staff for things they did which had been routine under previous regimes?
Doesn't Peru have more to worry about now in terms of its future economic development strategy for example. Or the appearance of a biological weaponized strain of Bartonella (Trench Fever now considered a biological weapon by US agents) in the highlands?
This Fujimori thing is just a "red herring."

Yea, ofcourse we have all the things you metioned to worry about, however, if you forgive or excuse Fujimori's behaviour during his mandates, then you give out a message that that is normal. He must be tried under the peruvian Judicial system for his crimes, as must Garcia at some point. Frankly, no, it isnt ridiculous at all. You can't just make blanket statements such as "red herring."
If you notice, corruption (Whatever your interpretation of it) is endemic in Peru, although it is slowly reducing. It used to be worse. If you make examples of people (especially those with power) people will realise that the law will come down on them like a ton of bricks. It is absolutely wrong to trivialise corruption. Frankly mate, no, it isn't ridiculous to single out Fujimori ad his staff.
