Peru: Miraflores night club denies racism charges

(LIP-jl) -- The exclusive Miraflores night club Mama Batata, located in the cliffside shopping center Larco Mar, has denied charges that it racially profiles its clientele. Indecopi, Peru's business regulatory agency, recently sanctioned the night club for discriminatory practices.

The night club's representative, Daniel Reinoso, denied Indecopi's findings and indicated they were based on a complaint made by Augusto Barron. Barron claims he was denied entry into the night club based on his skin color while Reinoso affirms that Barron was not allowed to enter the club because he was under the influence of alcohol.

Reinoso reiterated that club personnel decided not to allow Barron into the club due to the danger his behavior posed to others in the club.

"When club personnel denied his entrance into the club he became aggressive and even hit one of our employees who had no choice but to defend himself," stated Reinoso to Peru's RPP Radio.

The Mama Batata representative claimed that Indecopi based its decision entirely on Barron's declarations.

"We have presented five evidentiary elements that prove there was no discrimination. If that is not enough, than I don't know what is," Reinoso said.

**Since there have been numerous comments left on Mama Batata's listing in our Business Directory, both negative and positive, we would like to hear about your experience(s) at the Mama Batata. We encourage you to leave your comments below.

well, i have always thought that racism in peru is not as accentuated as it is in other parts of the globe. Prejudice, on the other hand, is highly practiced. I've been to that club once or twice in my many trips to Lima, the amount of booze and coke that the people consume within premises is only compared to the clubs in LA or even NY. Chicks go there to get wated and guys go there to see what to fish that night. Never seen any sort of discrimination, but to argue that someone wasn't allowed to in just 'cause he or she was drunk!....that doesn't sound right,....people in lima are wasted from monday to monday....particularly the "pituquitos" that continuesly go to this club, so...someting is fishy here....either that guy started a violent discussion or security didn't like him from the start. After all, they all wanna keep miraflores "pretty", don't they?
lol

umm hummm.....  Well, cant say there is any racism goin on in here.  The girls are beautiful, the crowded dance floor is awesome, and I am there every Friday and Saturday Night.  Just Stay away from the place on the lower level with the WATER BEER!!!  DONT PAY S/. A SOLE FOR THAT CRAP!!!

Never been there myself, but I wouldn't be surpised if it does happen. Racial prejudice is as much a part of Lima life as most people's failure here to say 'please' and 'thank you'.

I will say this there are clubs in NYC that I am certain turn away blacks because they are black.  They have blacks guys working as bouncers which is a double slap in the face.  They pretend that they are looking for a certain clientele but, what they are really looking for is a white clientele. This is a global problem.

I visited Lima in 2006 and on my first day in the city, I visited a posh restaurant on the coast -- one had to walk down a causway to get to the dining room and I felt as if I was eating my meal in a boat.  Anyhow, as I was leaving the restaurant, I noticed a confrontation by the sea-causeway between a restaurant security guard and several dark skinned men swimming in the water by the causeway.  The swimmers were being 'shooed' away from the rocks by the causeway where they were resting.  The security guards were saying that the rocks and the causeway were private property -- the dark skinned men complied and left.  My friend during that visit, a local named Farid Kahat, explained that the coast and the causeway were in fact public property.  In any case, I found Peru to be very racist and extremely segmented by social class.

Mama Batata's is full of prostitutes/bricheras of all backgrounds, so there was no discrimination. My friend was denied entrance one time because he was sloppy drunk and looking for a fight and he is white. Racism is normal everywhere around the world and comes in different forms. Back in Thailand and Japan, we don't let blacks, arabs, muslims, jews, and indians in many of our places and the signs are clearly posted that they are not welcome. I dont' know people are shocked at racism in Lima or elsewhere in the world. It's human nature and we all are racist ourselves to some degree.

# Denisa says :

I agree with Jacob. It's a sad unfortunate truth that racism is the norm in many places and it all comes in different forms and variations. Many people don't like it nor do we have the power to change things immediately as the old guard will always groom the younger people in their ways to succeed them. Hate breeds more hate and it starts at home.

# Pitucha says :

There is racism and discrimination all over the world. Not only in Peru ANIMAL. In Europe, USA, Canada, etc. The whites against the blacks, the blacks against the mexicans, the mexicans against the asians, the asians against the Arabs and so on. Please do not try to fool the audience with your inane "racism" sermon. Before being too judgmental with Peruvians, let's put in prespective how racist your own culture or country is. Give me a break!

Luis,

I don't know that there is a practical answer to this nasty eternal dilemma of racism.  As we can see from the comments above, it's a complicated and loaded issue and it taps something deep within all of us.
What is certain is that no matter how common it is throughout the world and how culturally acceptable it is in parts of the world, it is WRONG. If that's a judgment call on my part, I'm happy to make it.  If we accept that it is not right to practice racism and we teach this to our children and our children's children, then maybe there is hope for the future.

# keepintouch says :

It's true that there is racism all over the world as Pitucha said. but i think the main problem is that Peruvians are not proud of who they are and this cause people not to stand up for their rights 'cause simply they think that's too much to hope for. I went to Rypley to buy a pair of jeans and when i asked where i could find a particular pair i liked at that moment the answer was," They cost 195.00 soles".

This club is o.k., been there a couple of times, it may appear to resemble a disco in NY or LA, but it don't got that smooth flavor, the people  are majority white, and I can definetly believe that they screen their clientel, but this happens every-where, especially in NY or LA,

Racism is an eternal evil inherited in Peruvian people through centuries,
Hope it changes, but that's asking an enitre civilization to die and be reborn again, whites will always  discriminate against cholos and blacks, and cholos and blacks will continue robbing and acting up,
Sorry for the reality check,  cycle of hate in Peru,

Every person I have met from Peru have been very mean, racist and evil. I must also say the same for most foreigners who come to work in America. This is my country, and I do not have to go to your country to take jobs from you, nor would the people in charge allow me. It would not break your face to smile and answer when I say hello to you.Remember you are representng your country, and honestly I can say you tend to be very stuck up. I am very friendly, when I visit a foreign country, and that shows INTELLIGENCE.

I feel it did happen. I live in the U.S.A. and it seems skin color dictates everything. I met two co-workers from Peru, and sadly I must report, that they were mean and very racist. I know they do not represent all the people in Peru, but  when you visit other countries , you do represent your country, and Peru is not high on my list of friendly people, so far...I am American of African and Irish descent, and the two nasty people I know from Peru have color in their skin tone, but  they seem to kiss up to white people and they hate Black people. This is my country, and they are the ones here working, and I am not in Peru working. lol
People need to watch who is let into the  nightclubs, and see if it based on color, but sadly many nightclubs around the world, including America prefer white people to enter. Drunks of any color should not be admitted. Just BE NICE PEOPLE!

Peru, I don't know what to say about that place...The "light skins who call themselves white" are racist towards dark skin ppl...then the "the dark or tanned skin ppl sometimes who claim themselves to be white" are racist towards the other...I have met many Peruvian ppl that claim themselves to be white, but strangely they don't look nothing like a white person I have seen...LOL...many of them dye their hair to blonde color so they can be white! so sad...
