(LIP-ir) -- The Regional Directorate of Education of Metropolitan Lima (DRELM) has announced that due to the low temperatures which have been registered in the city, especially during early morning hours, school hours could be changed to a later time.
DRELM director, Guillermo García Samamé has reported that several schools in Lima have officially put in requests to the Ministry of Education to have school's begin half of an hour to an hour later.
In Villa María del Triunfo district, where temperatures reach lower levels than other areas in Lima, a group of schools has requested to have hours changed to protect younger children from the cold.
García, who is sure the requests will be officially approved, has stated that there is no problem with changing school hours as long as students are in school the required 40 hours a week.
If requests are approved, the administrative staff of each school would have the power to decide when it is best for their students to start their school day.
"Schedules will be based on each districts necessities. If the school wants to change the schedule by a half hour or an hour, I don't think there should be any problem," stated the director after pointing out that there are over 200 thousand students in Lima.
According to Peru's weather service, SENAMHI, the coldest time of the year will be in the beginning of August.
