(LIP-ir) -- The Incan Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is on the verge of, once again, being recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, stated Vice-Minister for Education, Victor Raul Diaz Chavez.
The international contest, The New 7 Wonders of the World, organized by the New Open World Corporation (NOWC), will come to its end this Saturday July 7.
Diaz recalled that during the month of June, Machu Picchu, located in Qosqo, Peru - "bellybutton of the world", was among the top voted for sites of the list of 21 places being considered for the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The Vice-Minister stated that even though Peru has had great results until now "we must not let our guard down" and continue voting for the ancient Incan citadel, so Peru's people will be able to celebrate this Saturday.
Diaz Chavez noted that just like American Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz and multi-billionaire Bill Gates voted for Machu Picchu, Peruvians should vote for Machu Picchu and have it honored as one of the New 7 Wonders.
The final list is planned to be announced on July 7, 2007, or 07.07.07, in Lisbon, Portugal, in the Estádio da Luz, Benfica's stadium at 4.30 p.m. The Vice-Minister explained that if Machu Picchu were to be on that list, people all over the world would here of the sacred city, which would not only benefit tourism but also benefit any product exported out of Peru.
Machu Picchu's victory is in the people of Peru's hands. It only takes a minute by logging onto the
New7Wonders page and filling out a simple form, after which the person will receive an invitation to cast their vote through their e-mail.
Other Hispanic countries participating are Mexico - Chichen Itze, Brazil - Christ the Redeemer, Chile - Easter Island Moais and Spain - Alhambra.
