(LIP-ir) -- The Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, which was recently honored as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, will no longer be included on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) list of endangered patrimonies.
Director of the National Institute of Culture (INC), Cecilia Bákula stated that UNESCO took the decision to take Machu Picchu off the list in a meeting in New Zealand.
"In the Worldwide Heritage Meeting in New Zealand, UNESCO lifted the technical observations on Machu Picchu. It is not at risk," stated Bákula.
The INC director pointed out that the Management Unit for Machu Picchu (UGM) should take the necessary measures and coordinate a development plan for the area of Aguas Calientes, which is located near the archaeological sanctuary and has serious urban problems.
Last April UNESCO sent a mission to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, Peru in view of concerns by the World Heritage Committee for the conservation of this outstanding Andean archaeological center and its natural environment.
Now that observations have been lifted, Bákula stated that UNESCO has acknowledged Peru for its conservation of the monument. Machu Picchu has been declared a Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
