I'm very scared for my family in Peru. I've been there in 2003 but like it was said, I only felt a tremor. I am watching the Peruvian channel here at home and so far we have not heard of any casualties.

Hi, I'm from Lima. This earthquake has been extremelly scary and has taken many of us by surprise.
I can only speak for people in my area, San Isidro, but we are ok. People are still on the streets and very shaken, but we are ok. Oh God.... at this moment it is starting again, but very softly. It has been said that little tremors will continue for a week.
I can't speak for everyone in Peru, but there hasn't been any major accidents reported yet. I hope everyone is ok.
Just so you know, cell phones will not be working for a while since most lines are busy, so wait a little. Hopefully you'll be able to contact your family soon.

I would just like to mention that I posted a classified about this to alert people, but reported 3 earthquakes - which was later corrected.
The USGS is now reporting only one earthquake, near Chincha. Two aftershocks exist: one south of Ica and one between Chincha and Huancayo.
# Alan says :
15 August, 2007 [ 20:13 ]
I just spoke to my wife who also had to hang up abruptly at 8:07 and reported the same aftershock as Alessandra. She is in Miraflores and thank God the phones are working there. She says that her parents say that this is the worst earthquake they have felt in 60+ years in Peru. She did not report any type of widespread damage, but a lot of panic in the streets.
# Michael says :

You can see a list of quakes at:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_big.php
And the most current map of quakes for the area at (more useful):
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/10/285_-10.php
I seriously doubt Machu Picchu felt much - there were only minor tremors in Huancayo, and that is much closer.

lucio;
We have been talking to my wife's sister in Huancayo, and I can tell you everything is fine there.
We also were able to contact my wife's sister in Chincha, very close to the epicenter. Things were shaking for a good while there. She isn't leaving the garden, so she couldn't give me any idea about damage to the area, but everything connected to the ceilings and walls in house are now on the floors.
# Alvaro says :

The phonelines seem to be a problem. My mom was trying to get through to Peru and couldn't. She could only talk to my aunt very shortly before getting cut off. I just talked to someone online who lives in Miraflores in Lima said things were ok there but that it took alot of people by surprise and that there was not much news of how it effected people outside of Lima.
# Kathy says :

The USGS has re-evaluated the data, and is now reporting this quake as a 7.9.
I should mention something about quakes. Magnitudes are exponential, not direct. Meaning a 7.9 is hundreds, if not thousands of times more powerful than a 7.0.

I am not in Peru right now, but I felt moved by the people here that have posted good wishes and prayers. I thank you all in the name of all my peruvian fellows and family.
It is confirmed, there has been two separate but simultaneous quakes. the first one at 6:41pm with a magnitude of 7.7 36 km away from Chincha. the second one was felt right after the first one. with a magnitude of 7.5 and this one was at 148 km south west of Lima.
God bless you all!

There had been TWO simultaneous earthquakes.
the first one hit at 6:40.58 with a magnitude of 7.7 R. at 36 km west of Chincha Alta.
the second hit a minute later at 6:42.34 with a magnitude of 7.5 R at 148km south west of Lima. that's the reason why the quake was felt for such a long time in Lima.

Kelly,
We really do not know, there is no cellular or landline service. It was near the epicenter and I am sorry that I can not tell you what you are asking, but no one knows yet what is going on there. It will take time.
You can contact the US Embassy if your brother is an American, or your own embassy if you are another nationality, and the Red Cross. The Red Cross is liekly the first to have information to give out.
I will pray for your brother and I assure you if anyone finds out more SOLID information, the good people on this website will post it.
It is simply terrible to not know, but I think that is the case right now. The Red Cross can be contacted at the following webiste.
It is the page that discusses international services, specific contacting love ones out of reach due to whatever circumstances.
Keep posting here as often as you like, we are worried with you.

The people who are talking about God are fools and idiots. If there is a God, that fool in the sky is the one who sent the damn earthquake in the first place. You should be cursing the fool. And guess what? The majority of the deaths occured when the Señor de Luren church collapsed during a church service in Ica. Which goes to prove that if there is a God, he is a monster... who should be insulted and execrated at every opportunity.

16 August, 2007 [ 00:31 ]The people who are talking about God are fools and idiots.
Gosh i just need to say this out that vaballathus, i don't give a damn whether you believe in God or not, or your own low perception on the existence of God or your own assumption on how God makes this world and sends all these earthquakes, tsunami, twisters etc to mankind but please, there ARE others who still have faith and belief in God and that these are the people who believes that things happen for a reason - yes, there are casualties, there are damages but for those who still have faith in God are the ones who will accept this tragedy sincerely [that applies in no matter what/which religion you are in] then they will know deep inside, God is only giving a little challenge for us to wake up and start realising how precious the world is and how precious our loved ones is. God never leaves us, God is always there deep inside our heart protecting us...

Mirabel,
I live in California, but being a born peruvian, I have Direct TV - Canal SUR Peru and watch a few live chanels from Peru on a regular basis... you are not going to believe this but at first they announced your uncle with a different name, I thought even if that wasnt him, he was going to report if any other "padre" was death or injured so I kept on watching and paying attention, He was telling the reporter how the Church had fell on them, then He mentioned the name of the padre Correa who's name was put on the banner underneath your uncle by mistake, He said padre Correa was a little injured, nothing too bad, but then He started to talk about how much of a miracle was for him to be alive. Then a few seconds later the TV people corrected his name putting this one on the banner. IT WAS HIM!!! and I got so excited to see that. He is quite tall, probably on his mid sixties, gray hair and spoke with a spaniard accent. At some point I felt like recording that interview with my cellphone so I could show it to you but the interview was ended little later.
With all the pain that I am going through from watching my people in so much trouble and me here without a chance to do much for them... it makes me feel so very happy to see that I least I was able to put a smile on someone's face.
God bless you all in pain right now!

My girlfriend just called me from home and said that she just saw your uncle again on TV.... so now on top of being alive he is also becoming very famous... LOL! ...this time she saw him on UNIVISION news... I dont know if you are able to get this chanel where you are, but Im sure they will air that same interview again today some time soon, because what my girlfriend saw was just a preview of what they will have later on the main edition.
To everyone here following up on the news, according to the latest update, the people in Pisco is finally getting real food. they are having a delicious "arroz con pollo" and they will be celebrating a Mass later today in the main square.

In fact, that is why we were all so worried, because he would've given his life to help another or others.

Nicole,
As I have mentioned before, I have direct access to live TV from Peru. Althought it is true that looting and starving has happening, looks like by Saturday morning the incredible amount of help from both inside and international finally made it through.
I have two nephews that live in Lima but had gone into the disaster area to volunteer for help, I could try to contact them and see if they have a way of finding out about your friend. where exactly was your friend staying?
Also remember, Peruvian goverment has quite a bit of opposition and at some point this people was also trying to take advantage of this moment to discredit the goverment. I am very sure that after everything gets settled down the opposition is going to come back stronger looking for responsibles. News are always in the eyes of the beholder...

Peloflex,
I am glad to hear that food is finally starting to get through. I have tried to access Peruvian news via the internet, but I'm still learning spanish.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance your friends can provide to help find out information about my friend. He is Peruvian and his name is Ademir Alejandro LaRosa Ramos. He lives in Pisco, and worked for the Paracas Overland travel agency. They were located off of the main square on San Francisco, I highly doubt the office is still there. I think his family lived on Santa Rosa, although I don't know where in Pisco that is located. When I call his mobile it goes straight to voice mail and I don't know if he would be able to make international calls from his mobil or from the pay phones (at this time anyway). I live in the US.

About 5 members of Lea family are on the list of deceased.
First and second floor seemed to have disappeared under the 3rd and

Firefighters were working today at the site today and rescued 2 more bodies, however it is expected about 20 people died at the hotel. But,
a wall collapsed on a firefighter and they suspended the rescue mission.
It has been reported that they do not allow other rescue teams to intervene and it has raised protests and concern among people that awaiting for their family members to be rescued.

Everyone;
My fiance, Ana, called me today! She and her family are ok. Their homes were destroyed, and they are living currently in the center square.
But, they are not hurt. Which is very good news.
Thank you, everyone, for all your thoughts, prayers, and for trying to find out for me if she was ok.
Again, thank you all!
Tom.

The Nazca lines are undamaged and Paracas suffered some damage but is mostly in tact and open fully for tourism.

Lima Nazca buses take small detour to avoid damaged parts of Ica. Journey times are normal.
Ballestas Islands trips restarted 2 September 2007.
In 15 days tours will restart to Paracas NP.
Damaged Mirador (lookout) over cathedral rock formation & Lagunillas are not open, but other parts of Paracas NP are OK.
Wildlife & Candelabro are intact said one report:
another said 60% of sealions had left.

I need to know the status of my friend who I believe was in Pisco the day of the earthquake. Her name is Sapna Thakur. She is an American from The Bay Area of Northern California. She goes to college in Chicago. She is East Indian, and about 19 years old. She was doing volunteer work in Arequipa in medical field and went to Pisco the Sunday before the earthquake. She has not responded to my emails.
