Evacuation Begins in Callao Peru After Tsunami Warning

(LIP-ir) -- Peru's Civil Defense has begun evacuating people in the area of La Punta, Callao to different parts of Lima.

The evacuation was begun after an earthquake, registered at 7.5 degrees on the Richter scale, hit Peru and Tsunami alerts were issued.

Tsunami warnings were issued for Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Colombia by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii.

Evacuation measures after the earthquake, were confirmed by Peru's Fire Department Commander, Carlos Córdova while Callao's Mayor, Alex Kouri stated that the evacuation was a preventative measure.

The evacuation of this area in Callao, Peru was begun when large waves and ocean movement was reported 30 minutes after the earthquake and threats of a Tsunami were reported.

My sister in law ,, sarah devine with arthritis society is in peru with group that finished 4 day trek to machu pichu. We have not heard from her since 11oopm newfoundland,canada time tuesday nite. If anybody has any info on this group please email me thank you. she is scheduled to fly home thursday august 16. The rest of her group schedded for jungle excursion and she was not along with two other group members. she was headed to lima . any info would be great. thank you. concerned family!

Spoke with my sister in law in Lima... still some panic, but concerned about my Mother in Law, she is evacuating Callao.

Has anyone heard how the evacuation is going... My Mother in law  lives in the vacinity of the naval station.

How long would it even take for Tsunami to start, if a quake was first registered at 6:40pm.

Our prayers are with all the people, and those in ICA as well.

Spoke with several friends who live in San martin, on the border of Callao.  Things are calming down, evacuation was stopped, mostly just the panic has been the issue.  Damage will be surveyed in the morning.  A part of the airport roof was damaged, but flights are still arriving & departing.

I have friends visiting Lima, and there are others planning to join them next week.  Is there still power and water in Lima? How long do you think it will be until phone lines will be restored? Also, what is the state of the airport? Are there delays?

i have familia  in Ica, Nasca  and Callao -  you can contact the international  red cross  for donations of supplies,  blankets  and  medicines- they can direct  you    for  contact information   and   where yo can   send supplies
