CANADA ANNOUNCES RELIEF ASSISTANCE FOR PERU

The Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, today expressed Canada’s concern for those affected by the earthquake in Peru and outlined Canada’s initial emergency response.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and devastation caused by last night’s earthquake,” said Minister Bernier. “On behalf of the government and people of Canada, I extend our sincerest condolences to those individuals and families affected.”
“The Government of Canada is immediately providing $2 million for relief and recovery efforts and is in the process of identifying experienced partner organizations in Peru to respond to the situation,” said Minister Oda. “Canada will also make available its roster of humanitarian experts and its stockpile of emergency supplies, should Canadian expertise or relief items be requested. As a good neighbour, Canada stands ready to assist Peru in its time of need.”
Officials are on their way to the region to identify how Canada can best assist with humanitarian and recovery needs.
The Canadian Embassy in Peru is contacting registered Canadians in the affected area. There are no reports to date of Canadian injuries.
