(LIP-ir) -- The European Commission has announced that it will donate another €1 million to aid the victims of the earthquake which struck Peru on Wednesday August 15.
The European Commission has also announced that it will send a team of experts to assess the needs on the ground and identify how European civil protection can contribute to overall relief efforts.
The decision to provide this added aid was announced less than a day after the European Commission had already announced that it would donate €1 million and stated it would assist through its humanitarian department, ECHO.
Provisions being sent will benefit 50 thousand people, almost half of the population in the town of Pisco.
Louis Michel, the Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid stated, "It's crucial to quickly and effectively aid those suffering the consequences of the earthquake. People need medical attention, clean water, food and tents because the regions is going through a cold wave, especially at night."
