Peru: Ica City on Steady Recovery Path after Earthquake

(LIP-ir) -- After six days of chaos, confusion and a general downward spiral, the city of Ica is beginning to get back on its feet, after the earthquake that crippled it on August 15.

Peru's Andina News Agency has reported that economic activities are beginning to pick up and commerce is moving forward.

Commercial activity can be seen in the reopening of markets and the ambulatory sale of diverse products. Hotel occupancy has risen and a steady flow of inter-province traffic has been reported to be taking place.

Peru's National Civil Defense Institute continues to inspect homes affected by the earthquake to determine whether their existence is a risk or threat to people.

Electricity and a constant water supply has almost been completely restored throughout the city, which has permitted members of the community to begin daily activites.

Police presence has increased in the streets, especially in the city center, and the citizens are able to be more at peace. This has also facillitated the clean up process and the removal of rubble and debris.
