(LIP-ir) -- Last month, Peru's World Cup Commission, the special commission in charge of Peru's qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, decided to fire Peru's National Selection coach, Julio Cesar Uribe.
The decision was made after Peru's performance in Copa América Venezuela 2007 and after Uribe had had several problems with players on the team.
World Cup Commission President, Juvenal Silva, then went to Chile and negotiated with José Guillermo "Chemo" del Solar, who at the time was coaching Chile's Católica University. "Chemo" accepted Silva's offer and is now the new coach of Peru's National Soccer Selection.
Peru's new coach has taken on the task of qualifying the National Selection for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, a championship Peru has been absent from for 25 years. He is confident and has high hopes.
Del Solar has already established a good relationship with the press, stating that he would give statements up to 3 times a week and would set up a special area where the media could speak to the players.
The time has come to see the progress the new coach has made. Today at 8 p.m. (01:00 GMT), Peru's team will play a friendly against Costa Rica at Ricardo Saprissa Stadium. Del Solar has admitted that he does not know much about the Costa Rican team.
Peru is to play two other friendlies; one against Colombia, on September 8 and another against Bolivia, on September 12. They are both to be held at the Monumental Stadium in Ate.
Qualification rounds for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will begin on October 13. Peru's first match will be against Paraguay.
