(LIP-ir) -- Yesterday, Callao's Regional Government set up the first 25 prefabricated housing units in the district of San Andrés, one of the eight districts in the Province of Pisco.
Pisco, approximately 60 miles from the epicenter of the magnitude-8 earthquake on August 15, was severely destroyed while tens of thousands of its people were left homeless.
Regional President of Callao, Alexander Kouri Bumachar, personally inspected the reconstruction of the part of the region which he is responsible for. He stated that 60 more units would be erected within the next few days. Thus housing 60 more families.
Peru's National Civil Defense Institute (INDECI) has also announced that it will begin the installation of the housing units in Pisco today. INDECI Chief, Luis Palomino, stated that 500 units would be erected at 8 different points in the Province of Pisco.
Palomino also announced that 106 prefabricated classrooms would be set up.
The Chief of Peru's Civil Defense Institute has stated that this reconstruction stage will be supervised and inspected by INDECI to ensure that cases such as the Embassy Hotel do not repeat themselves. The first two floors of the 5-story, touristic Embassy Hotel collapsed during the earthquake.
Palomino explained that the hotel had not had a permit and had not been authorized to build the top 3 floors.
