(LIP-ir) -- The magnitude-8 earthquake that struck Peru on August 15 devastated parts of the country and brought down a countless number of buildings. One of the structures affected by the earthquake was the Tambo de Mora prison in Chincha.
686 of its prisoners fled the prison as the outside walls crumbled to the ground and as cells were filled with water from the rising tide.
Peru's El Comercio newspaper has reported that 424 prisoners, of the 686 that escaped, have been found and relocated to other prisons. It was reported that 287 returned of their own free will, while 137 were captured.
The prisoners have been sent to prisons all over Peru. 355 (340 men and 15 women) are in Cañete, 49 prisoners (32 men and 17 women) are in Ica, 7 men are in Chincha, 6 men are in Lurigancho, 2 men are in Chiclayo, 2 men are in Trujillo and 2 men and 1 woman are in Lima.
After the earthquake, Peru's government announced that all of the escaped prisoners could turn themselves in, whether it was to municipal or regional authorities, and they would be allowed to finish their sentence without further consequences.
The final day Peru's government established that the prisoners would be allowed to turn themselves in was yesterday, Wednesday September 5.
