(LIP-ir) -- It seems that the fears Peru's Extradition Unit Chief, Omar Chehade expressed were valid ones.
According to Peru's La Republica newspaper, Chile's Supreme Court could reject Peru's request to extradite former President Alberto Fujimori.
It was reported that the only thing Chile's Supreme Court was waiting for, was for Chile's President Michelle Bachelet to return from her trip to Japan and Australia.
The president of Chile's Supreme Court five-justice panel, Justice Alberto Chaigneau filed for sick leave yesterday, one day before he had stated he was going to give a ruling.
Justice Alberto Chaigneau has postponed the extradition case against Peru's former President Fujimori until next Monday September 10 due to a strong pain in his ear.
Peru's La Republica newspaper reported that taking medical leave before a ruling was passed on a controversial case, was common in Chile's justice system. The judge for Fujimori's last trial, Judge Orlando Álvarez and Chile's Supreme Court Prosecutor Mónica Maldonado, both took sick leave before giving their final decisions on Fujimori's extradition to Peru.
La Republica also reported that Chaigneau had taken sick leave upon President Michelle Bahelet's request. Thus, giving Chile's president time to finish her trip to Japan and sign a free trade pact with the country. In addition, it was claimed that the ruling on Fujimori's case would be given sometime next week when, Bahelet had returned to Chile.
According to Chile's online newspaper El Mercurio, the justices have already rejected 10 of the corruption charges being filed by Peru and can not agree on the final two, both of which involve Fujimori's participation in death squad killings.
