(LIP-ir) -- Peru's Sofia Mulanovich, 2004 ASP World Champion, won first place at the Rip Curl Girls Festival held in Liencres, Spain.
This was only achieved after she defeated Brazilian surfer, Silvana Lima during the fourth event of the 7 event ASP Women’s World Tour.
The high scores affirmed that Mulanovich rode the Liencres waves exceptionally, unmatched by any of the other surfers. She scored the only set of 9-point rides (based on a 10 point scale), and an outstanding 8.5 against Lima in the final.
Sofia was quoted as saying “I am so happy, I haven’t won a contest for a while so this feels amazing, I needed a pretty good score in that heat and I just thought to myself ‘I can do this, these waves are perfect for my surfing and there is no way she is going to get this one off me, this is my wave’!”
It was a tough duel between the two South American female surfers. Despite the fact that Lima took an early lead in the Final, Mulanovich dug deep and answered with superb surfing, scoring 8.50 and 7.05.
After this incredible win, Sofia stated to be ready for the world title. After Mulanovich’s victory, her first in 2007, she has gone from World No. 6 to World No. 3 on the ASP Ratings.
