1,000 Military Troops and Police Officers Maintain Peace in Ica, Peru

(LIP-ir) -- According to Peru's Andina News Agency, Peru's Prime Minister, Jorge del Castillo announced yesterday that the number of Peru's National Police officers and military troops would not be reduced in the regions which were affected by the earthquake on August 15.

Del Castillo stated that the officers and troops would remain in the provinces to ensure citizen safety during the reconstruction of the cities.

Peru's Premier made this announcement in a meeting where the mayors of the different areas had expressed their concern that the officers and troops would be removed now that reconstruction had begun.

In addition, del Catillo stated that the police and military would be kept in the provinces to maintain the peace and provide security for construction workers.

After the earthquake devastated the provinces of Pisco, Chincha, Ica and Cañete on August 15, Peru's president sent over 1,000 military troops and police officers to the affected areas to maintain order and peace.

Peru's Andina News Agency reported that Peru's Prime Minister is currently in Cañete providing humanitarian aid for the towns of Hualcará and San Andrés.
