Peru's President Alan Garcia Meets with Monsanto Representative

(LIP-ir) -- Peru's RPP News reported today that President Alan Garcia met with representatives of the Monsanto Company, a multinational agricultural biotechnology corporation.

The company's Governmental Affairs Manager for Latin America, Rafael Aramendi, stated that he had expressed the interest the multinational giant had in producing seeds in Peru to President Alan Garcia.

"We consider that Peru has adequate zones for the production of seeds, that's what we want to invest in," stated Aramendi to Peru's press.

In addition, the Manager for Latin America explained that Monsanto had carried out studies in Peru's highlands to determine the feasibility of the project. He reported that Peru's agricultural potential was very big. "The potential the Peruvian agricultural sector has is very big," said Aramendi.

According to Peru's RPP News, Monsanto has already largely invested in a vegetable plant in Ica, Peru. In addition, the company has investments in Chile and Colombia. Monsanto is also the world's leading producer of the herbicide glyphosate, marketed as "Roundup".

Monsanto is the leading producer of genetically engineered seed and also the largest conventional seed company in the world. The company owns Agracetus, the producer of Roundup Ready soybean, which is the first successful genetically engineered crop produced for the commercial market.

Monsanto is an insidious, evil, destructive company that will try to do to Peru what it has done to so many other countries.  Destroy it's natural food production capacity and indigenous foods in favour of genetically modified, corrupted monstrosities designed only to bring maximum profit to that company and to create a total monopoly of the world food supply, and even more dangerous, of the worlds seed supply.  I doubt anyone in Peru including the President has enough power to stop this megalithic entity from entrenching itself in this agriculturally diverse country.  I only hope one day people will wake-up to the evil this corporation brings to the world and do away with it, either by law or by force.

Please do not accept this company. The problem is they make new varieties of seeds which are sterile, need enormous amount of artificial fertilizers and don't respect the other farmers which are not interested in having the own original seeds.  If the farmers buy their seeds for the first time they are happy, but if they do not buy them the next year or in the future and if by an chance there is a plant of theirs in the field they sue them.

Besides, they are using our seeds which the Peruvians have cultivated for hundreds or thousands of years, and we are not asking for the genetic ingeneering!!!

We need a 100% organic fields they are going to polute our fields. We need to sell our products to any part of the World. Organic is the way to go.

Keep Monsanto, Cargill and their camouflaged friends out of Peru!!!

I studied at the Universidad Agraria La Molina. I am not joking.

Enough is enough.

This is just the beginning of the results of passing the stupid "Free Trade Agreement"  Please don't forget to thank Mr. Garcia as all the farmers in Peru are raped and forced to either buy American genetically altered seeds or go out of business.... Now you know why Bush was so eager to pass this crap...

The same thing will be happening to medicine and a number of other things. The Peruvian people are going to wake upi very soon and realize what a mistake the "Free Trade Agreement" was, unfortunately it will be too late..

I (and millions others) agree with all the comments posted above, "living in peru" can initiate a campaign to block the entry of any genetically modified agricultural product (seeds or any other form) into peru.
lets begin by sending our friend camarada garcia milllions of emails every day until he gets the point:

Monsanto has to be kept from entering the peruvian farming industry by any means.

Members of the peruvian government should be more responsible and do their home work regarding the dangers of genetic modified seeds before allowing any big corporation pollute our lands, which of course they do it for profit and no as they claim to save starving nations. This reminds me of the movie "The wolf on the little red cap" triyng to help.
Now, if they know what they are doing, and ignore the facts, shame on them. Enough people should protest to stop this wolves.
