Areas Affected by Peru's Earthquake to be Rebuilt in Two Years

(LIP-ir) -- Eduardo Figari, a member of the South Reconstruction Fund (FORSUR), an organization established by Peru's government to organize the reconstruction of the areas affected by the August 15 earthquake, stated that FORSUR planned to rebuild the affected areas better than they were before.

Two months after the disaster hit Peru, Figari explained that the organization's goal was not to restore the area to the way it was but to improve it. According to Figari a great deal of construction work, not just reconstruction, had to be done.

When explaining the extensive work that had to be done, Figari stated that many of Pisco's areas did not have water systems even before the earthquake and that the damage in some areas had been underestimated.

In addition, Figari told Peru's RPP news that the Ministry of Economy and Finance had opened an account with 100 million soles and 4 million U.S. dollars for FORSUR to invest in the affected regions. Figari explained that FORSUR prepares a global estimate of the cost of construction and reconstruction, which could take up to 2 years.

Figari estimated that costs would increase to US$500 million. He also affirmed that FORSUR had been working intensely for the past months, busy collecting information with respect to the magnitude of the damage and calculating costs.

The FORSUR member explained that the organization would meet this week to establish committees that would be in charge of the reconstruction and construction of the provinces which had been worst affected by the earthquake.
