Peru's Government Authorities Discuss TPS for Illegal Peruvians

(LIP-ir) -- In an effort to move along the Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which was requested after the August 15 earthquake in Peru, a delegation of directors from the Peruvian American Political Organizations (PAPO) is to meet with Peru's government authorities today.

The US grants the TPS to countries that have suffered natural disasters or civil wars. The Temporary Protected Status is valid for up to eighteen months and can be renewed. If the TPS were granted, it would benefit approximately 500 thousand Peruvians illegally living in the US.

Sergio Massa, Norberto Curitomai and Aristo Carranza are to meet with government authorities today to discuss the progress of the TPS for Peruvians without documents in the US.

Curitomai stated that there were plans to meet with high-ranking authorities to explain the work that was being done in the US and what needed to be done to reach the objectives.

"The TPS will grant undocumented people in the United States a 'semi-legal' status that will give them access to a work permit, a driver's license and be able to study at the university," said Curitomai.

The Temporary Protected Status was granted to illegal immigrants in the U.S. from El Salvador when the 2001 earthquake struck the country and to Nicaragua when hurricane Mitch devastated parts of the country.

The TPS for Peruvians illegally living in the US was requested after a magnitude-8 earthquake destroyed a large part of the region of Ica and seriously affected other provinces in Peru.

It is estimated that approximately 1.2 million Peruvians, legal and illegal, live in the US.

Hello!
This article is a big mistake. The PAPO is  in Peru meeting with the Peruvian government and not in the USA.

I was today on the Marriot Hotel where the press conference was held. I hope this site can modify this note so people wont get confuse

This is a joke! 500 thousand Peruvians are asking for Protected Status because the country is in shambles. Protected from what? What do the illegal Peruvians need to be protected from. Out of the 25 regions this country has ONE was seriously affected. I understand the request but it is completely unjustifiable. The "undocumented" wokers are looking for a freebie. How embarrasing, how can you seriously ask for PROTECTED status when the country is perfectly fine. Now if you live in Pisco that is another story, ok maybe some mercy is called for... but the rest of them are conchudos.

What a total joke - no credibility at all left for Peru in the TPS request.  Its been three months, time to face reality and acknowledge its never going to happen.  If it was up to me, I would tell congress to pass a law to never give visas to Peruvians again given how many have abused and staid illegally in the states!

ahh, the schitzophrenic poster rides again, making the same grammar and spelling errors under all his identities.

And the usual bunch of lies and half-truths and platitudes based on no facts.

Talk about jokes.

I see TPS as a good thing for both countries. I am a natural born citizen of the U.S. and I don't see any reason why TPS shouldn't be granted, it would boost both economies in many ways. Alberto, this would not be a freebie there are costs involved and it would give the U.S. some controls that it presently does not have. The monies the Peruvians living in the U.S. send back home will help the economy of Peru grow allowing the goverment to render more aid to the earthquake survivors. I see this as a win win deal for all involved. At least Peru is U.S.A. friendly.

How would illegal Peruvian imigrants prove they are from Peru and not from - say - Mexico?

In the same way that people of El Salvador or Nicaragua is doing...
Think positive.

Why doesn't Peru have TPS for the New Orleans hurricane victims or any other US natural disaster?  How would they like 500,000 nerdowells coming here for awhile and hangin out?

To answer your question Michael, ID's Passports Birth certifacates. In order to aquire TPS the Peruvians living in the U.S. would have to apply for it with the I.N.S. and Homeland Security.

JB, trying to compare Peru's economy to the economy of the U.S. is like trying to compare your income to Bill Gates. Face the facts they are living in the U.S. already if they are granted TPS then they would at least be paying some type of taxes, we would also have some way of knowing where they are and what they are doing. As is we haven't got a clue.

You know, illegal immigrants pay an awful lot of social security taxes with fake numbers - money they will never see.....

Sooo....jb....the refugees from Katrina were ne'er-do-wells?  Victims of natural disasters in general are?  What's your point there...?

The USA's GAO estimates that illegal immigrants add about 1.3 billion dollars a year to federal taxes, and just under another Billion to state and local tax bases through payroll, property and sales taxes.  The same study calcuated they cost the USA about 1.5 billion dollars a year in tax expenditures, leaving a proffit of just under 1.2 billion dollars to my country.

duh, stupid typo, leaving a profit of just under .8 billion dollars.

Mericorp,
You are partially correct in that the U.S. Social Security Administration maintains roughly $6 billion to $7 billion of Social Security contributions in an "earnings suspense file" -- an account for W-2 tax forms that cannot be matched to the correct Social Security number. The vast majority of these numbers are attributable to "undocumented" workers (illegal immigrants) who will never claim their benefits. However, local school districts have to educate 1.8 million "undocumented" children (children of illegals). At an average annual cost of $7,500 per student, the cost of providing education to these children is about $11.2 billion.
Based on US Census Bureau data, when all taxes paid (direct and indirect) and all costs are considered, illegal households created a net fiscal deficit at the federal level of more than $10 billion in 2002. Why? Because with nearly two-thirds of illegal aliens lacking a high school degree, the primary reason they create a fiscal deficit is their low education levels and resulting low incomes and tax payments, not their legal status or heavy use of most social services.  Woops! There goes the "profit" attributable to illegal immigration.
