(LIP-ir) -- Peru has decided on who will manage and have control of the country's safety and emissions inspections.
After almost a year of debating, reviewing and correcting the law, the Andean country's congress announced Thursday that control of the country's safety and emissions inspections had been handed over to the Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MTC).
The law passed clarifies that Peru's MTC will manage and regulate the nation's safety and emissions inspections.
Furthermore, the law explains that only the MTC has the power to authorize the establishments where inspections will be held.
With an 89-2 vote, congress approved the bill that is aimed at improving the standard of vehicles that are allowed to circulate on the country's roads.
It was reported that during debates, congress did not criticize the mayor of Lima for his failed attempt to establish the inspections in the country's capital.
On the other hand, Yonhy Lescano, a member of the APRA party, affirmed he was against the new law, stating that the inspections were only going to take more money from the country's citizens.
He added that the MTC had failed at improving Peru's streets and highways and had failed even worse at reducing accidents.
