Living in Peru

As a part of International Road Safety Week, Peru's national police will be helping citizens identify possible problems with their vehicles as well as identify improvements that need to be made. One of the services officers will be providing is the painting of license plates. To make sure that all license plates are legible, transit police will be repainting old license plates. This and other services will be available next to Campo de Marte in Jesus Maria from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Medical check ups and informative lectures will also be given.

It woule be great if the "Transit Police" began to properly control tarffic and how people drive and where they park instead of painting licence plates.

So, why are there license plates on cars?  To make sure the police and witnesses can tell which car was a particular place or time (not to mention to track violations).  And being legible is probably a legal requirement for that reason.
