(LIP-do) -- Peru is a key country to strengthen regional ties which are very important for the European Union, said European Parliament president Hans-Gert Pöttering who highlighted that problems cannot be solved in a unilateral way in a globalized world.
EP President Hans-Gert Pöttering mentioned that interregional dialogue must focus on the strengthening of our common mission for an effective multilateralism. “Problems cannot be solved in a unilateral way in a globalized world,” he added.
Fighting common challenges such as climate change, terrorism, poverty, natural resources overexploitation, and illegal immigration can only be solved through close and fruitful cooperation.
In addition, Pöttering said that any progress should come along with the consolidation of democracy, economic growth and social justice.
When asked about energy cooperation between EU and Latin America, president Pöttering noted that the cooperation between EU and Latin America could be an important factor for the development of new energy technologies. “The EU has included the energy topic as the first priority on the political agenda,” pointed out Pöttering.
He also underscored that the energy topic could be an important milestone in the Latin American integration and development.
EP President Hans-Gert Pöttering considered Peru a key country in the strengthening of regional ties which are very significant for the European Union.
Pöttering said that the relations between the European Union and Peru date back from 1991 when the EU provided technical and financial cooperation for the country’s development.
