(LIP-do) -- Peruvian Foreign Minister, José Antonio García Belaunde, affirmed this morning that Peru hopes to reach a trade association agreement with the European Union (EU) in less than a year. García Belaunde pointed out this would be possible thanks to an increased flexibility in the negotiations between both blocs. The EU Troika and CAN leaders agreed Saturday on a framework for an agreement that aims to knock down some trade barriers.

“What we need to do is to work towards concluding our trade deal with the European Union in less than a year”, he said on RPP national radio. He explained that the flexible nature of said agreement will allow the bloc of four Andean Community countries to adhere to certain parts of the agreement, but not others. In addition, García Belaunde mentioned that another of Peru’s goals after hosting the V EU-LAC Summit is to attract further German investment which is expected to grow after German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Peru.
