Official says Peru may have to choose between US, Andean Community trade pacts

Peru may be forced to choose between a trade pact with the United States and one with its neighbors, a senior official says. A deal with the United States, approved by the U.S. Congress last year, can't take effect until Peru tightens intellectual property laws. But Andean Community rules require Peru to get permission from other members to modify such laws — and the leftist governments of Bolivia and Ecuador have rejected Peru's request to do so, Eduardo Ferreyros, vice-minister of foreign trade, said late Tuesday on Canal N television. Peru reaches 17 mln mobile lines, 72.5% coverage in Q1
Peru has reached almost 17 mobile lines in service in the first quarter, up by 1.4 million lines from 15.4 million a year earlier, according to Peru's telecoms regulator, the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel). Piracy Cost Peru Software Cos $75 Million In 2007
A computer software trade group says that piracy in Peru cost software companies $75 million in 2007. An annual study commissioned by the Business Software Alliance shows that 71% of software installed or packaged in Peru in 2007 was pirated. The alliance includes software giants Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL) and Adobe (ADBE). Gustavo Leon y Leon is the group's Peru representative.
