Obama for free trade deal with Peru, but against FTA with Colombia

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said today he supports the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United States and Peru, but is against signing a trade deal with Colombia.

“I approved the Free Trade Agreement with Peru, but I’m against an agreement with Colombia”, said Obama in an interview published by the Chilean journal “El Mercurio”.

He stated that he will maintain this position until he is sure that “no union leaders are being murdered in Colombia” and added that “we need to stop these types of paramilitary activities”.

The presidential candidate said that the FTA between his country and Peru is the type of agreement needed because it respects workers' rights and the environment.

On the other hand, Obama regards Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chavez, as a “manageable threat” for his country’s security and he will be open for dialogue with Venezuela and Cuba if elected president.

Furthermore, Obama acknowledged that he had not been to Latin America, but said he would like to visit the region before the elections.

People talk as if Obama was already President of the USA.
Everyone has views & if I were President, I would cut a deal with Columbia to!
If Mickey Mouse was running for President I would vote for him, since our choices are nill. At least HE would make us laugh!

Cleo Cleo Cleo, you wouldn't happen to be related to that other joke by the same name 'Powers' would you? I'm talking about Austin, seems like you share each others intelligence now doesn't it? Your ill informed, racist and totally misguided statements come close to beng the worst, yes worst, use of the written word I've seen on these pages.

The only piece of garbage you've written worth responding to is the one sentence, and I use the word 'sentence' lightly, is the one about JFK. If you knew anything about the political history of your country (I'm only assuming you are American) you would know JFKs assasination probably had more do to with this speech he made more than anything else

'The very word 'secrecy' is repugnant in a free and open society and we are, as a people, inherrently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oathes and to secret proceedings for we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding it's sphere of influence. On infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, it is a system which has conscripted vast human and material resources into the bulding of a tightly knit, highly efficient machine that combines military, diplomatic, intelligence, economic, scientific and political operations. It's preparations are concealed, not published, it's mistakes are buried, not headlined. It's desenters are silenced, not praised. No expenditure is questioned, no secret is revealed. That is why the Athenian (Sola??) lawmaker decreed it a crime for any citizen to shrink from controversy. I am asking your help in the tremendous task of informing and alerting the American people. Confident that with your help, man will be what he was born to be, free and independant.'

JFK

If you are willing to take the time to read and respond to the items and other peoples comments on this (or any other open forum) please take the time to write something intelligent enough for the rest of us to read.

But before you do have a look on You tube at 'Zeitgeist" and you might just learn something. There's still time for you to become an aware, respsonsible citizen

Hea, Thanks Mark!
are you Black? Oh, I mean African American? I shore wouldn't want to be racist!
A lot of your words make sense but as we all "Americans" know, our Freedom grants us to say what we will---freedom of speach, & we can do so much more. It doesn't necessarly mean we are racist but we can be! Thats our rights! By the way, where were you during the Vet. Nam war? Oh, before your time huh? Well, as I said, our rights come at a price so I dont have to appol. to you or anyone else for anything I say or do. Just for the record & its really none of your bus. some of my best friends are black. Go fish!

# Mark says :
17 June, 2008 [ 17:35 ]

Actually no Cleo I'm not black. As a matter of fact I'm not even American. I'm Australian, yes Australian. I'm just a concerned global citizen from one of your countries biggest allies who has taken some time to check out your (and therefore our) history, that's all.

Your 'so called rights' (which are eroded more and more by your government with each and every passing day) have come at a terrible price.

Millions and millions of people from countries all around the world have paid a high price for your so called rights and still are RIGHT NOW AS WE SPEAK due to your governments ILLEGAL WARS in Iraq and Afghanistan. Millions of inncent civilians have paid the ultimate price of their lives for your so called freedom and you're having trouble stringing some words together to support your shallow arguments.

Have you ever thought about Iraq, for example, is ever going to be able to accomplish rebuilding itself after the US led invasion? More to the point, do you even care? Most of the decent , honest Iraqi citizens who helped your government, who by the way were mainly the middle classes, have been forced to flee their country due to persecution from within and are now in outlying countries such as Jordan and Syria living as refugees. They have no money and virtually no future and eventually will be forced to return to Iraq where they will more than likely be executed by the militias for helping the US government because no one cares. Even after the help they gave not even the US will take them in.

The US government has created misery for millions of people and the American people have been brainwashed into believing they did it for the good of Iraq. You have criminals, yes that's right criminals running your country and they should all be impeached and jailed for their crimes against humanity.

The Federal Reserve
Your involvement in WW1
Your Involvement in WW2
Your involvement in Panama
Your involvement in Vietnam
Your involvement with the illega state of Israel and the complete collaspe of the Palestinian State
9/11
Your war against Iraq
Your war against Afghanistan

The list goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on

Educate yourself and stop believing the lies your government and it's backers pass off as truth.

You may be asking yourself why an Australian has so much to say about your countries government and it's foreign policies?

Well, everything your country does affects my country and every other country out there in this big wide world of ours. It affects me and my family along with billions of others everywhere. That's why I say what I say and have the opinions I have.

All these issues not only affect the US people, they AFFECT ALL THE PEOPLES OF THE WORLD.

Educate yourself. The world is bigger than just the US.

There is no war on terror! It is part of a complete fabrication that has been going on for centuries. The single biggest terrorist organisation in the world today is the US government and it's carried out under the guise of democracy right under your nose!

So called freedom does come at a high price. It's called DEMOCRACY.

Yours is being sneakily and cunningly eroded right now before your eyes and you don't even realise it.

Actually I agree with you! Its like the UFO's. Is there? ir not? Well, I dont know. Never seen one. Its no secret most Americans want us out of the Iraq war. Most dont agree with Bush. Its terriable, really. Wish the voice of our people would work but like you say.
Australia huh? wow! Your a long way from here. By the way, whats your plan to better our world? Oh, & before I forget it, how many missle silos does Australia have? To protect from "those"...War is everywhere. Its been around since Cain & Able. Like I said, I agree with you. I sometimes comment on "things" just to feel out people, to educate myself on whats really going on. I think your ok. Thanks for restoring my faith in our neighbors across the way! So what you want to do? Start a group to oust those that dont benifit the working class? & I'm not talking about the white collars!

Mark,
From an American:  you make some good points until you start over generalizing and developing "lists" of the USA's 'crimes against humanity'.  To include "involvement in WW1 and WW2 as well as 9/11" and as you say "many more" leaves me the impression that you simply do not like (maybe hate?) America and would prefer that we not exist?  It's alway troublesome when someone delivers their message in such a one-sided and partially uninformed manner.  Best wishes to Australia as I believe many of your citizens understand the role that America plays in assisting many in the world.  But we don't always get it right.

As a mestizo (metis) myself, I would be very glad that finally a coloured person can become the President of the powerful USA. Not that I am racists against whites - because I also have white ancestors as well as Incan ancestors...

Obama would be a lesson for the whole world...All stupid, abusive racists: ignorant. I wonder what Abraham Lincoln would have thought...
But Obama has proven to be a lot smarter than stupid Evo Morales (a non-white president).

# Mark says :
18 June, 2008 [ 20:46 ]

This is going to a somewhat long reply so hang in there if you will

Cleo - not so sure you agree with me or not, the jury's still out on that one. UFO"S although never having seen one, the facts of the matter are that in this huge universe we are surrounded by it has become obvious that it is no longer a possibility that other life exists out there - it is a mathematical probability. I'm sure all be revealed in the fullness of time.

It's not only Americans who want you out of Iraq - Australians do. The English do. I'd say after the almost complete devastation of their country probably most Iraqi's do- except the ones fearing execution when you do eventually pack your bags and leave. Most free thinking people around the world want you out.

Question: Where in the US constitution does it allow you to continually (over decades) invade other peoples countries?

Until the American people see what and who is behind what your government does, NOTHING WILL CHANGE. As things get progressively worse at home they will realise what your government has become.

I don't have a plan, I have a vision. Until people take back their own personal power and realise who and what they are instead of believing the complete B******* they've been told things will continue to collapse and fall apart. Maybe the total collapse of our society is necessary (there is always a bigger picture) before we wake up.

We do not have any missile silos, most people around the world have trouble finding us on the globe and that's just the way I like it. I hope we will never have nuclear weapons on our shores. There are already enough nukes out there to destroy our world many times over. We don't need anymore.

War is everywhere and it has been going on for eternity but it doesn't mean it has to continue now does it? It's only the people in power that make incredible amounts of money that force these wars on us, not the general populace. The population just gets suckered into believing that it's necessary for 'Freedom and Democracy' and send their sons and daughters off to die.

We are all equals - aren't we? So why is all the so called 'power' been put into the hands of a few greedy men? We let them, it's as simple as that. More frightening though is the fact that we are still doing it now.

THey dumb down us down and the vast majority are still unaware that they're doing it.

Rich, I am not anti American I simply do not like what the US government, under the manipulation of the international banks and multinational corporations have done and are still doing to us and the peoples of the world as a whole. That's all.

My 'lists' aren't my lists really. There is so much evidence of these crimes and many others out there that this stuff just can't be ignored anymore. Unless of course you choose to ignore the facts.

There are some interesting things being discussed in the forum pages here at the moment about these issues and others, go in and have a look. Maybe even involve yourselves in the discussions.

If you want to see some of the evidence type in any of the following to google or you tube

9/11
Zeitgeist
committee of 300
federal reserve
bush family
rockerfellers
rothschild
7/7

These will give you a good insight

Maybe I am 'uninformed' maybe not. At least I've taken some time to check out our combined hstory.

The statements I have made and will continue to make are based on facts nothing more, nothing less.

If the American people along with the vast majority of the western worlds peoples continue to believe the lies they've been told by their respective governments through what is nothing more than controlled media outlets, there's not much I can do about it.

All I can do is share what I've come to realise.

I have a lot more to say on these issues but I'll keep it for the forum pages

just because someone makes some statements about some important issues affecting the majority (accepted by the mainstream or not) that isn't shared by you doesn't make that person paranoid or unpatriotic does it?

Dearest Mark,

You are absolutely right and I would never question your right to express yourself.  I belief that the freedom of speech is essential in a democracy. And I don't believe I questioned your patriotism.  I resented having my patriotism questioned when I spoke out against the war in Iraq, so that's not an issue for me. It's just that you bore me silly.  Sorry.

Well spoken Lulu. Ignore this trash.
I think you are wrong about free speech though... it should have carefully set limits and we should work to to this end. Hear me out... You can't have people going off on crazed rants causing trouble and peddling hate. You wouldn't want terrorists to be given a segment on the news now would you, slamming our way of life? If they did they they might recruit new followers and instigate more attacks. You wouldn't want to have the Nazi channel now, would you?

# Lulu says :
18 June, 2008 [ 23:54 ]

Hmmm, you're kind of scaring me David R.  That's not exactly what I meant.  As much as I disagree with Nazis or klansmen or people with values/ideas I find repugnant (i.e. those who are racist or hateful or lack compassion), they still have the right in the U.S. to freedom of speech.  I think speech that incites violence is not protected, but otherwise the crazies can create posters and websites and little nasty pamphlets, which I'm sure they do.  I just don't have to read them or listen to them if I don't want to.  For instance, as much as some people hate the thought of someone burning the American flag, it is an act that is protected under the freedom of speech so I would never agree to the arrest of someone for burning the flag.  I will probably never do so myself, but it is an expression that is protected.  As much as I despise Rush Limbaugh and the other hate mongers who rule the AM airwaves, I would never dream of censoring them.  If we went down that slippery slope that you're hinting at, who has the right to say what is or is not allowed under the freedom of speech?  That's dangerous.  While Mark may bore me with his rants, he can go on and on and on.  He's allowed to and I don't have a problem with that.  I can just skip his posts.  To me, the freedom of speech is sacred.

You've said what I've been trying to say for a long time! & Yes, my spelling lacks! But my belifs? do not. Mark has some good points but like we all know, its hard to express oneself in such a short time here. I think Mark has a lot of stuff bottled up inside & its his way to get it out & thats ok. The U.S. is in Iraq & I for one would like to get out to & theres much division about this here but it seems it doesn't matter to Bush. He's an oil man & i'm sure he is lineing his pockets from it till he finally finishes his term, laughing at how easy we truly are. Dont fret Mark, we know whats going on but please dont judge all of us Americans as a whole. Aside from all this, we do freely help so many in need worldwide. Yes, I know what your thinking on that but get over it. You must realize, the U.S. "is" a ruleing nation & untill someone takes that away from us, it'll stay the way it is. If you want to see into the future, I'd suggest reading the Bible & I know "that" can stir a whole lot of worms.
Inca huh? My wife is Peruvian & from listening to her about her country from all the "rights" they have lost or not gained, belive me, we are in a better place. You realize they would be put in jail for not voteing? & you cant openly discuss what party you are? Yes & lets take a look at the infamious Shinning Path. Mayhap they are trying to set things right but killing people, like we do, is not going to work. If I were President, there would be so many changes. I think. Take care! One day HE will come & HE will set things right! Excelsor!

Obama for president,I dont think so!
It all goes to him being a Musslummmmm!
Actually, I'm worried & I pray you do not
think me racist For I hold no grudge for
no one. We, as Americans, do not take
to any sect that wants to endanger our
lives. The Musslummmmmms have blantenly?
stated, WE WILL DESTROY YOU AMERICANS
FROM WITH-IN! Probably, if I hadn't heard this
& the fact Obama IS a Muss. I'd most assurdly
vote for him. Ok Mark, your dead on on some things
about the U.S. I grant you that. What you got to understand
is, we the people, in todays world, are not actually the people that
control our Govt. Heck, I dont know who does, but we the people "HELP" those that are in need. In a country where there are so many Churches, its those that extend out in $$, prayer & goodwill. Please dont confuse our Govt. to them-us. Its funny really how much political garbage there is in our society. Sad to say, in most countries, its not a mans word that counts as of old but how much gold is in ones pocket. Its THEM that control. One funny fact my good friend just made, he asked me if some WHITE'S is racist then why is Michael Jackson trying so hard to become white? Probably should have kept quiet bout that but what the hea! I would like to make a true statement, "if" Obama does become President, then HE will be my President. I will uphold all U.S. citizen obligated duties to him, & my country. I may not like it, But Dad always said, Son, sometimes you gotta do things that seem to go against the grain to survive. Hi Cleo,

The Musslummmmmms have blantenly?
stated, WE WILL DESTROY YOU AMERICANS
FROM WITH-IN!

I wouldn't worry about the muslims Cleo, if I was going to 'worry' about anything destroying the US it would be the clandestine goings on of your current government. Whether obama is a muslim or not is irrelevant. The destruction from within started a long time ago-well before your current governments term-it's just picking up speed.

What you got to understand
is, we the people, in todays world, are not actually the people that
control our Govt.

I have understood this for quite a long time now. Maybe you need to realise that you actually do and are partly at fault here because the American people, along with the rest of us, as a whole-through misinformation and general apathy regarding the goings on the halls of the White House- have helped things along quite considerably. It is only in the very recent past that some have started to wake up and tune into the idea that all is not as it seems. Something, long rotten is beginning to stink in American politics and it 'ain't the trash Cleo!.

It is a well known fact- once again brought to us by concerned individuals who have taken their time to research this information- that the Democrats and the Republicans have long been controlled and manipulated by the same people. They do this through lobbying. Millions and millions of $$$$ every year to get what they want, sadly they achieve their ends through the help of both parties. Whether you vote Democrat or Republican, black or white there is little to no difference in the end result.

Cleo my friend, one thing regarding 'common sense' I've noticed is that it is not that common really.

Peace

Mark

For me to agree with you might cause me to agree with you again.
Could be worse, right? Mark?

Matter of factly, what do the Muss. believe in? I never been around them.

Have you noticed or did you know blacks are reeeeal quiet in Peru?

All the times I've visited there, many, I seldom ever see one. Real spooky since you cant walk down any street in Tulsa without bumping into one. I met a very nice black gentleman once in Lima. He was from Arozona? He & his lovely wife & 3 teenagers were in SanFrancisco Peru

viewing the catacombs, as was I & he said, Man, we're lucky to be here! We can't get lodging, restaurants wont wait on us & we are treated like scum! Taxi's pass us by, we'll be lucky to make it back to the airport! He inquired to me, do you know whats going on? I didn't have the heart to tell him & I sure didn't want his wife & kids to worry.
So I only said, oh, maybe its because its a busy season. LOL. Just goes to show what kind of treatment Obama "might" get as President visiting there. Just a thought!

Cleo

All this 'black' thing is doing is diverting attention away from what is really happening here. It is propogated by misguided people who have been 'conditioned' by incorrect 'assumptions' and 'perceptions'. We all have them. Organised religion is one of the biggest - Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Judaism - it doesn't really matter because they are all the same. They are all fabrications and help to hide the truth from us

When you start to look at the scientific evidence and facts available to us at this point - what we know and cannot be disputed - you begin to uncover some startling truths.

On a molecular level everything on this planet (and in the universe for that matter) is made up of the same stuff....think about that for a second....

The chair you're sitting on and the computer you're using along with everything else, on a molecular level, consists of the same stuff!  Everything is made up of electrons, they are a/the building blocks of the universe. If you look at an electron it is a 3 dimensional hologram Re The Holographic Universe). This is a profound point because if everything is made up of electrons and electrons are 3 dimensional holograms, what is everything? Once again this is known fact, this is only part of the picture though. When everything is viewed in this way - why have we become so seperated and detached from not only ourselves but the world around us as well?

There is a 'documentary/movie called 'What The @#%!? (Bleep) Do We Know' which explains how we influence and create our own lives in a easy to understand way. It also goes into Quantum Theory/Mechanics in a way which the average person can take in (myself included). Comprehending what these scientists/theologists/rsearchers from all over the world are telling us is another matter.

There is a lot of information available for us to sift through - all you need to do is take some time.

Einsteins 'General Theory Of Relativity', which modern science is based on, doesn't explain everything. Even Einstein admitted to this and was still working on it and other things right up until he died.

Another book worth a mention here, written by two more scientists (I can't remember their name) is called The Holographic Universe. This is quite a read with lot's of sixteen syllable words. What is interesting about this book is the fact that this theory explains all the things that Einsteins theory doesn't.

There is always a bigger picture Cleo, if you remember the movie Men In Black have a look at the closing sequence. Multiple universes, dimensions etc....I think they've already got up to 12 dimensions from memory- we operate in 4 i think. Even the concept of time itself is questionable and subjective. It is a very big and fascinating universe we live in and an amazing planet we live on so take some time to explore it.

Did you know the Ancient Sumerians described Uranus and Neptune in detail 6,000 years before 'we' even discovered they were there?

Did you also know that it's widely accepted now, due to further study, that the Pyramids of Egypt were built 10,500 BC?

There is much we don't know and there is much we have been lied to about.  Do some research for yourself.

Look and study 'the bigger picture'. You can keep focusing on the irrelevant misperceptions or you can dig a bit deeper. That's what's great about being free - we can choose.

It's all up to you.

Peace

Mark

Hey you guys (all of the above).  Let's just be happy for Peru that a US presidential candidate finds it credible and respectable enough to be considered for the Free Trade Agreement. No so with Colombia, which still has to get its act together.

Cristopher of Texas:.....you are out of your mind!  Bless the KKK?  oh.....my.....gosh! I guess you don't realize you're "scary" to most people, do you?  I'll be praying for you to be enlightened.

By the way.....how did we get into "multiple universes" and "12 dimensions"??  Isn't this thread about Obama being for free trade deal with Peru?  I'm confused.

Everyone....cool off!  Give yourselves a break.....go to "youtube.com" and write: Ajena (merengue) Banda Super Impacto de Puno.

The video part is not very good, but do yourselves a favor and watch the whole thing.  Notice where these guys are playing....one scene has them playing on a reed boat (caballito de totora) and the others on what appears to be the floating island of the Uros.

They're probably very poorly paid.....but oh! can they play merengue!  So, if anyone is planning to go to Puno, look them up and make a donation to the band so they can maintain their instruments or buy new suits.

The sound is great! these Punenhos are great musicians and they play with such gusto!  Their instruments look like they were "Made in Puno".  The "merengue" is totally out of their league....being Altiplano people.  I've bookmarked this video and whenever I need a fix...Laughing...I go for "therapy" to the Banda Super Impacto, and voila! I'm not p----d off anymore.  Their sound is so uplifting.....so I recommend that everyone above stop getting hot under the collar about politics and dance to the "Banda Super Impacto de Puno".  Turn up the volume and enjoy!

This is why the US Goverment sucks. As well as the reason for Illegal immigration. If People in Latin American Countries &  other 3rd world countries worldwide, Would be allowed to earn the same wage as the USA for Workers and Professionals then People in 3rd world countries would not have a need to move to the great USA. So the FTA is the reason that causes illegal immigration .

Undecided All these sites should help some Americans wake up. I said I was thru with this page, but after looking at all the "links" that have been submitted here, I thought it necessary to say, ok, so America rule's! So what? we still help so many nations, as in people, whom have been devistated by war, storms, earthquake's, etc. Billions of American dollars have been paid out freely to those in need. I'm not talking about our Govt. but common folk, like you & me. Recently, my wife, Peruvian born & raised, was sent to Honduras on a mission trip by a Church here in Tulsa. She endured many hardships for the children there, so's they could have new clothes, decent food, etc. Hea, yea, & even medical care furnished by Doctors & Dentists from here. She had a great breakfast, lunch, & dinner. Refried beans at all three & drank bottled water with it.Thats "all" she had the 3 weeks she was there. I dont know whats going on with our great nation. I know there are many things we, as a nation, do thats not right & one day, those will be accounted for, believe me. You can talk about the U.S. & that's ok by me! I believe we, the people, you & I, are literally blind to whats really going on in politics, the President, the Secret Service, them that are not in our eyes or we are aware of. It makes little difference to me, we are doing whats right & "THAT" makes it right, as far as "we" are concerned. You've got to understand the Govt. Hea, this has been going on for,, how long? Look at Rome! or the Vikings! People that have money can do just about anything. those that don't have it are not going to change anything in our leadership in our Govt. They will be put in jail for treason, or worse. Taxes were inacted to support the Civil War, yet we still pay taxes. Our city has raised taxes 5 times in the past 30 years to repair our hiways & yet we have some of the worst in the nation. Go figure that! We've built 2 turnpikes & taxes were raised again to build them & they said, after they are built, they will be free! That was 37 years ago & we still pay! Yet, through all of it, WE are still the best, safest, well fed nation in this world.  As long as the Unites States of America rules, I will support it by my life! When that day if it ever comes, that troops, law enforcement, or whatever forces entry into my home, then as the bumper sticker reads, they will have to pry my gun from my cold, dead fingers!
Free trade agreement are for those that have! Not the ones that have not! And, ok, I rambled! & I can't spell! Cool

You can always find links, websites, youtube pages, etc that will try to disprove and repudiate free market economies. That can be said about any topic. Whether it be religion, politics, automobiles, food, what ever..... there are always opinions supporting and opinions against any subject.  There are only a few examples we have so far in Latin America by which to guide ourselves as to whether the free market economy and approaches such as free trade agreements overall are better or worse for a country.
The primary example of this would be Chile, since they have the longest run at opening up their markets and creating free trade agreements across the globe.  We can clearly see in the case of Chile, that opening up the markets and creating free trade agreements has NOT kept the people in poverty, nor kept poor people starving.  Just the opposite.  It has allowed the country of Chile to reduce poverty(13.7% as of 2006), transform its society and establish itself as a regional leader in advancement as well as creating a stable enviroment for its people.

In the case of Peru, it has only followed the example of Chile in the last 10 years, creating a free market economy, and only recently did Peru embark upon the persuit of free trade agreements.  To the matter, we finally see povery levels starting to decline in Peru (5% reduction in poverty in the past 2 years as confirmed by the World Bank, and 3 major Univesity studies in Peru)  This coincides with the emergence of the free trade agreements and the increase in flow of Peruvian goods, whether they be manufactured, agricultural, mineral or whatever to other countries.

Another example of this would be Mexico which also is following the free market economy and free trade agreements.  Mexico has a free market and export-oriented economy and is firmly established as an advanced middle-income country. According to the World Bank's latest available figure (September 14, 2007), it has the highest income per capita in Latin America, in market exchange rates and in purchasing power parity. Mexico (along with Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile) is a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. According to Goldman Sachs BRIMC review of emerging economies, by 2050 the largest economies in the world will be as follows: China, USA, India, Japan, Brazil, and Mexico.
As an export-oriented economy, more than 90% of Mexican trade is under free trade agreements with more than 40 countries, including the European Union, Japan, Israel, and much of Central and South America. The most influential FTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which came into effect in 1994, and was signed in 1992 by the governments of the United States, Canada and Mexico. In 2006, trade with Mexico's two northern partners accounted for almost 90% of its exports and 55% of its imports.
A rapid growth in exports propitiated by NAFTA and other free trade agreements, and the restructuring of the macroeconomic finances initiated during Zedillo's and continued during Fox's administration had significant results in the reduction of the poverty rate: according to the World Bank, poverty was reduced to 17.6% in 2004
Before the period of free trade agreements and open market economies, Mexico had slipped in to economic crisis (1994-1995) where 50% of the country had fallen in to poverty. So as you can see, sound macro-ecomomic policy, open market economies, and FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS have reduced Mexican povery levels from 50% to 10 17.6%( "Mexico: Income Generation and Social Protection for the Poor". Retrieved on 2007-02-16.), disproving the leftist propaganda and idiotic assertions about "the horrors of free trade agreements" and all of the doomsday predictions how it would create even more poverty or keep the poor hungry etc.
But again, in both the case of Mexico and Chile, it's taken  a minimum of 15 years to reap the real benefits and fruits of all of the free trade and open markets.  Peru is just now BEGINING to enter in to the stage of being stable enough and being economically feasible to deal with the poverty issues.  As has been proven over and over, first a country must build, rapair, and expand its economy before it can transform it's society and deal with the most difficult problem of reducing poverty.  But clearly, we can see that it has and DOES work.
Chile and Mexico can and need to continue investing in its people with further develpment of social programs aimed at incentivizing those on the lower segments of economic spectrum.  Mexico in particular needs to accelerate its investments in education, and promote innovations as well as significant investments in infrastructure and agriculture.
Take a look at the other countries that are now using the open market economies and free trade agreements in Latin America, and you will see one consistency. They are all moving forward, reducing poverty, growing their economies, increasing their middle class.
As I've said before, there is no magic wand that elliminates povery over night, but we now have several Latin American examples that this system does work, and now in the case of Peru, we can see that it's finally starting to BEGIN bearing it's fruit.
Remember, there will ALWAYS be nay-sayers and alarmist, negativists, and those who are so endoctrinated by some radical political agenda that they will do and say anything they possibly can to destroy any progress that is made UNLESS it is their own political fanatical ideology that produced the positive results.  It is very sad, because usually these same people will swear up and down to be so patriotic, and they will use slogans of support of a country etcetra, but in reality, they have only one true allegence, that is to their own form of politics, and since the current system in Peru which is now starting to reduce poverty and transform the country, is not the form of government THEY want, they will bash it, deny the truth before them, and do anything the possibly can to destroy it, regardless of what that might do to the country as a whole, or to the progress being made.  The only thing they will be happy with or satisfied with is for their own radical extremist politcal party or political agenda to take over the country.  Even with all the evidence right in front of them that the current system in Peru is starting to work, they will still insist that their way is the only way and to hell with anything else, regardless if it's actually working.  And that my friends is NOT patriatism.
If you beleive in your country and want your country to prosper, you will want that to happen regardless of whoever is president, which ever system is being used, and that will be the most important thing to you. Even if it doesnt go along with what you THOUGHT was the better way to get there.  It may not be the way that YOU wanted, but progress is being made and its working.  So grow up a little bit, take som time to re-think your PRIORITIES, start putting  the good of your country first and not your little political agenda's and ideologies, and more than anything, QUITE WHINING AND B******* ABOUT EVERYTHING JUST BECAUSE YOUR POLITCAL PARTY DIDN'T WIN, or because you belong to or have a different political/ideological belief.  Peru is moving forward, you can stay behind and whine about everything, or you can help it move forward and join the rest of the modern world and emerging economies by being positive and realising that TOGETHER Peru can tackle all of the issues it needs to deal with, rather than creating more divisions.

Alas, Jet is correct in saying. Maybe ole Phillip is trying to recoup from starvation from all the laws the late great President Fujimori created. I must agree with Mr. Fuji, he was right on because he took away all the welfare from the lazy people & had them go back to work. That's a fact & you can quote me on it anytime. Yea, I know, our United States could learn a thing or two from Fuji to! Lord knows our welfare system is way out of control. Forgot to mention, Phillip, why do you say "if" other 3rd world countries made the same "wage" as we do....... Do I sence a bit of jealiousy here? I truly hope not! If we had your veggies & such high quality fruits, say like the baseball size avacodos, & how many varieties of potatoes? Peru has? If you made what we made your food would cost you an arm & both legs. Do you realize, here in Oklahoma, a golfball size avacodo, and as hard, cost about $1.00? A 2 litre bottle of Coke or Pepsi $1.39? 1 gallon of gas, $4.00? an electric bill around $200.00 monthly? You gotta have airconditioning or you'll melt! Peru aint doing so bad, I've been there many times & I know, it aint expensive, so be glad Peru's wages are low. So's your food! I bought a whole wagon full of banannas from a merchant in Lima once & I gave it all away to people I didn't even know & heck, weapons was not on my mind! $20 American Dollars for a freak'n full wagon! Phillip are you going to fight and insult everyone now? You call others pathetic but I would venture to say that at this point most people here now feel that way about you.  You made many assertions, none of which are based on fact but your own opinion even though it is very easy for anyone to do their own investigation and see that your assertions are purely politically inspired and not factual.  Like I said before, you are free to beleive anything you want to.  But your attemtps to prove or disprove points have failed completely.
First you say I don't know "your" country, even though I have Peruvian nationality, lived in Peru, was schooled there, have family there, own land there, and I promote Peruvian culture in other countries.  Once again, another clear example where you state something as "fact" when in reality you really had no idea.  This seems to hold true about you in many things.  You state things without really knowing or trying to find out, but ONLY based on your opinion. Then you get out of control angry when people point out how wrong you are lol. This is just childish.

Then you say I am a westerner that knows nothing about Peru.  We are all Westerners Phillip,  Peru is in the Western Hemisphere, and the term Westerner was used primarily by people that lived in the old Soviet Bloc to refer to those that were from Western Europe or from the Western Hemisphere that did not support the Communistic system of the Eastern Block.  So once again, you don't even know the terms you try to use to insult others, and in the long run you make yourself look and sound even more rediculous.

Then you say my points and arguements are nothing but BS, but you cannot disprove them because they are based on facts and statistics that I presented and are supported by the most respected sources on the subject.
And no, as I've told you in the past, I'm not a Fujimori supporter or fan.  Even though he did some good things, he also did many bad things.  Quite recently I wrote an entire article on the evils commited under the Fujimori government.
If you are certain about your own beleifs, then you should be able to back them with fact and proof, but someone that does not have either facts or proof usually becomes enraged when they are presented with facts and proof that do no support their own fanatical idiology.  The fact that you constantly resort to only insulting and throwing temper tantrums really dis-empowers your position and you loose what ever creadibility that you may have had at one point.
Look at Cleo, being a Fujimori supporter, I have a different opinion, but do you see Cleo telling me to F*k off or anything similar?  And equally, I may have a different beleif of Fujimori than Cleo does, but I merely present the facts about Fujimori without having to attack Cleo.  That is the clear difference.  Only people that are so insecure about their own beliefs resort to such childish behaviour.
"your Country always seems to enjoy bullying and stepping on 3rd world Countries, Guess it gives the west a sense of Power"
You mean like Russia has done right now in the republic of Georgia? Do you enjoy the way the Russians are attempting to collapse this 3rd world nation from within by creating, empowering and supplies seperatists groups within Georgia and do you like the way Russia is currenlty bombing this 3rd world nations capital city?

"Thankgod China will be the next Superpower. I pray Russia & China unite"
So of course you must support the way the Chinese have invaded and are now commited cultural genocide in Tibet, a 3rd world nation, and how Chinese have no freedom of thought or freedom of expression?  Do you love what the Chinese company is doing in the Chinalco mines in Peru, where Peruvians are dying from black lung disease becuase the Chinese payed company doctors are saying that these miners are not sick when independent doctors have documented that the miners are very sick?  Then the workers are sent back in to the mine by the Chinese "jefes" to keep working the mines.  And just as they do that soft of thing in Peru to Peruvians, so also do they do this to their own people in China.  As one very well known Chinese politician recently said, "so what if a Chinese dies in a factory, we have 1 billion people to replace him"
And this is what you want for Peru and the rest of the world?  Somehow, considering the rest of your "opinions" phillip, I'm not suprised.  But at least I can say, that after all of this, everyone here knows the way you think, and what your opinions are based on.  Good luck trying to convince people from this point forward lol Wink

Well, I just have to chuckle at a poster that calls for China to replace the US as a superpower, especially since the country he's posting from is so reliant on remittances from relatives in the US, and the economy partially based on the dollar.  Guess he wants the struggling Peruvian economy to fall apart, too.

Barrack Obama is nothing more than a tool for the liberal media and foreigners, and his countless missteps, gaffes, and pandering to foreigners will be his undoing.

David,
I only want the best for Peru.
And your American Scam FTA has ruined Peru.
I highly doubt if Peru would be worse off if Russia or China were Superpowers.
I agree with Flores Lourdes political views but I would even vote for Ollanta Humala. And yes I totally agree with Hugo Chavez.
As far as I am concerned USA has been Latin Americas Thorn.
So Russia & China who are both Communist Countries may be a better alternative.
I think you just totally hate Peru and enjoy watching Peru & Latin America being stepped on. Your insulting comments regarding Chacarilla de Estanque proved your attitude towards Peru. I suppose you will criticise Peru and Peruvians at every oportunity.
Well that proves your American ignorance & arrogance. I for one am truly looking foward to seeing you your country & your People stepped on by a new Superpower.
And maybe then you ingnorant Americans will learn a little humility as it seems that the only language you People understand is violence.
Well USA has created a lot of resentment worldwide and you will bring destruction upon yourselves just like other bullies before you.

Peru should have a decent minimum wage equivalent to the US minimum wage $7.00 its disgusting that Peru has no minimum wage and poor People work for wages as low as 30 cents an hour, This is exploitation.
Also Peru does not need American Companies setting up loans for Poor People towards education or career thisa is way too risky for the poor. What happends if thier career does not take off, Then the poor still has to pay back the loan and be even worse off.
Peru should have higher tax for foreigners living in Peru as well as Visitors to Peru.
Peru should charge double the Gasoline rate to foreigners living in Peru.
With the Tax money and extra gasoline charge Peru could use the Money to set up a Welfare System for the poor people, As well as Schools & Hospitals for the poor. Education is the only way for Peru to improve as a Country.
Peru should not sign the FTA agreement with the USA.
Peru should welcome any financial aid from any country provided thier are no ulterior motives to the financial aid.
All American or Foreign Buisness in Peru should pay the Peruvian Employees the same wage as thier own Employees in their country of origin.
I hope Lourdes Flores becomes the next Peruvian President.

Phillip,
You want Lourdes Flores to be president of Peru....You really think she has a chance to win?...Wink
Someone else commented in a different article that women in Peru (most poor women, low income, etc.) will not vote for her because 1) she does not have children 2) she is not attractive 3) her career is not as successful
I DON'T necessarily agree with that above, BUT...if I compare her to Margaret Tatcher, Benazir Bhutto (RIP), Cristina Kirchner, or even Hillary Clinton, my compatriota Lourdes fell behind.
Condoleza Rice is sort of like Lourdes. But, I don't think Americans would vote Condoleza as president. Americans wonder why she is not married, and has no private life. Condoleza speaks 5 languages and has an outstanding career in politics.

Power to the Lady.

# rice and sugar says :
15 August, 2008 [ 09:25 ]

Phillip,
Just so you don't think I am a shallow minded Peruvian, I don't agree that Lourdes is ugly; the fact that she is childless though will have an effect on how the typical Peruvian women see her in the elections.
Condoleza Rice is quite feminine, and her outstanding career in US politics, coupled with Obama's influence, Condoleza has more chances to win US elections than Lourdes ever will.

I met Lourdes once in person. She is a nice lady in my opinion. I think she does love Peru after all. But you know what, El Chino Fujimori also loves Peru. He loves Peru so much, he came back from Japan taking a HUGE risk to end up in jail. He is now in jail paying for something that every other Peruvian president has ALSO done. Allan and Toledo also were corrupt, but they were never caught! So, the fact that Fujimori is now in jail is just life and history. No surprises for anyone.
We will see how the final veridict comes up with the human right charges. I say, even if they convict him, I am still thankful and grateful for everything he did for Peru's economy. Viva el Chino!

Peruvians have clearly shown that they don't want Ollanta as president! Peruvians prefered to vote for Allan Garcia.
In the last elections Peruvians thought "mas vale diablo conocido, que diablo desconocido". Translation (not a good translation so don't kick me): Better to vote for a "devil" that we know well (Allan), than to vote for a "devil" that we don't know at all (Ollanta)

The Reality BS US FTA Agreement of Peru

Opposition

  • Presbyterian Church (USA)

Peru is engaged in a delicate reconciliation process after decades of armed conflict and the country remains burdened by high levels of poverty. In a desperate attempt to gain support for the U.S.-Peru FTA, the U.S. Trade Representative is claiming the trade pact will lead to increased democratic stability in the region and curbed cultivation of coca and trafficking of cocaine.

Based on the results of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), we think the opposite is true. Some of the major problems in NAFTA’s model are replicated in the Peru FTA. This model is a “one-size-fits-all” approach to economic development for poor nations that does not live up to the principles of fair trade. The US-Peru FTA will cause lost livelihoods in rural communities, reduced access to life-saving medicines and perpetuate the global “race to the bottom” for workers and environmental protections. The US-Peru FTA will not bring stability or development to the region!
