Can anyone tell me who the culture was that left us this glyph? 4000 years is a long time ago.
Peace
Mark

I don't think they have been named. 4000 years ago civilisation was only just starting to get underway further south. The people who made this would have been nameless wanderers only just starting to work together to farm the land.

Mark --Here's a little more information on the news item, from Andina. The geoglyph was made by preChavin people living in northern Peru, near Chiclayo. Their civilization has not been given a name.
"CLEANING THE EAGLE. The Special Project Naylamp-Lambayeque started the cleaning and maintenance works of the 4,000-year-old Geoglyph called "El Aguila Milenaria" (Millennial Eagle) on June 26, 2008. The historic geoglyph, found by world-renowned archaeologist Walter Alva about a decade ago, is located three kilometres from Oyotún (Chiclayo’s district). It was made of laja stone and measured 60 metres (196 feet) long and 50 metres (164 feet) wide.
According to researchers, the valley where the geoglyph once thrived a unique culture during the Early Formative period or pre Chavin dating as far back as since 2000 or 2,500 B.C. Special Project’s director Celso Távara Sial, and representatives of Tumbas Reales de Sipán Museum, verified the archaeological site’s conditions and ordered its immediate clean up to retrieve the amassing figure, which was affected by the rains and human activities around the area."

How do they know it is an eagle? Looks more like a pigeon. Or looking at it while standing up, looks like an angel with a cone cap on top of the head.

It could be an ancient prophesy foretelling the coming of Naylamp!

Thanks, American in Lima, You are very informed about the oldest civilizations in South America, one of them the Chavin, your comments make sense.
Thanks again.

This "eagle" geoglyph is clearly an anthropomorphic BirdMan as is evident from the human legs and feet that it stands on. More likely than not it is a depiction of an ancient Peruvian sun god that was inspired by the bird-like pattern that is sometimes seen in the sun's corona during total solar eclipses. Similar anthropomorphic BirdMan avatars of the sun god are found in other ancient cultures around the world.Add your comment
