Peru: Photo of the day - $3.8 billion plant

Living in Peru
Israel J. Ruiz

In an effort to finance a liquefied natural-gas project, Peru LNG, a partnership between Hunt Oil Company of Dallas, Texas (Project Leader, 50%), SK Energy of South Korea (20%), Spain's Repsol YPF (20%) and Marubeni of Japan (10%), has landed $2.25 billion in loans from the Inter- American Development Bank, the World Bank's International Finance Corp. and the U.S. and Korean Export-Import Banks. The consortium has gathered the funds to build a $3.8 billion plant in Peru, which is expected to begin operations in 2010 and produce 4.4 million metric tons of natural gas a year.

The transformation has begun.

Tranformation of what?  Peru's economy?  Yeah, that must be it.

I hope Peru is getting a significant share in royalties/taxes for this project.  Outside investment on the right terms is GREAT for Peru.  On the wrong terms it is only great for the companies involved.

Anyone know what the arrangement is?

My guess, Curious, is that Peru is subsidising the project with tax exemptions.

This is a really great photo of the jobsite.  As someone who lives and works on it, I am glad that we're progressing so well; not to mention how great it is to help Peru develop more.

You may fool some but you know as well as I do, this isn't about helping the Peruvians, or natural gas, or money.

This has ALREADY helped many Peruvians, spured employment, added growth to the GDP, allowed for growth of other industries, and in coming years will help greatly with fuel supply within Peru itself.

Are others (besides Peruvians) going to benefit from it?  But of course, there will always be those who will only find bad in ANY type of investment that is done in the country......specially if it does not involve a socialist or communist programme of some sort lol.   How dare those evil investors try to make money in Peru! lol

I'm sure the Peruvians are gratefull for the oppurtunities BUT
as we all realize, the labor-wage isn't what one would "need"
to live, not in luxury, but have enough to sustain a family. I
for one, as you do, our country exploits? other countries "goods"?
at that country. Take the rain forest for example. What a terriable
thing to lose out on so many healthy advantages yet at this
time I read that 500 acre's are cleared in each hour. Dallas Texas
has what? 50% of this deal? The only ones to gain are they!
Too bad the controling factors are destroying that which may
benefit the entire world. The last scale I hear about Venzulla, spelling, hoo, their gas prices are 19 cents a gallon. This whole thing reeks
of masterminding to benefit the rich. Sorry, but my generation
has seen enough to carry over into two more generations. I
would like to think the Peruvians will benefit, & they will,,,,,some.
I love Peru! It's been an inspiration to me ever since I went there 11 years ago. The people are the nicest in this world. I scream in my soul to see them struggling to survive to feed their families. I hope your right! The world already has enough "stuff" to make us all suspicious.
Have a blessed day!
