Workers at several sprawling mines in Peru threatened to join a nationwide mining strike that entered its third day on Wednesday, while the government tried to persuade striking laborers to return to work by declaring the walkout illegal. Unions at Newmont's gold mine Yanacocha, Freeport-McMoRan's Cerro Verde copper pit, and additional mines of zinc producer Volcan were slated to vote on Wednesday whether they would down tools.
